As Freddie is characterized as a gossip, his lies are excused as "misrepresentations" ; whereas when women are gossipy, or chatty with friends, their credibility is diminished greatly. People still seem to trust Freddie as a credible source.

Things Fall Apart-Okonkwo

Macon Dead has done everything in his power to be nothing like his father. Where his father landless and a slaver, Macon now has many keys which symbolize his power and his ownership. Likewise, Okonkwo's father is a man who is essentially powerless, poor, and not well respected. Okonkwo's only fear is that he will become like his father, powerless and poor. Consequently, Okonkwo displays many characteristics which are considered manly and honorable in the eyes of his society, all while making sure to never display womanly qualities which might lower his status

"'Not you,' Macon said to her. Ruth looked at her husband, She parted her lips and didn't say anything." (35)

Ruth's passivity paired with Macon's abusive dominance highlight the complete lack of kindness between the couple. Macon's cruelty also illuminates his unspoken knowledge of the origins of his son's nickname. As the head of the home, Macon has permission to be overbearingly aggressive with both his wife, and children. It is clear that he leads the home with control, and the women are taught to be submissive and quiet.
