I love how there are many ways to teach fraction and decimal operations rather than just the standard ways such as finding common denominators and lining up addition/subtracting like I remember learning in elementary school. I think teaching students how to use methods such the number line, manipulatives, and drawing diagrams, keeps the focus on understanding the concepts of fractions and decimals. Rather than being taught what to do, students are taught how and why various fraction and decimal operations occur. Students are not longer just going through the process of solving the math problem, but they are understanding what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how it can be shown in multiple ways.

In terms of teaching fractions and decimal operations to students, it is important for students to first understand that decimals are fractions and fractions are decimals. They are just in a different form. Using manipulatives would allow students to understand that relationship. When going through a math problem for fractions or decimals, it is important to think aloud the thought process because students are likely to solve the same way. Solving in multiple ways will show students that there is not just a single way to solve. Additionally, reminding and showing students to check their work is important because it reinforces the thinking they used to solved the problem.
