Your personality and your skills

1. Describe your character and explain what made you the person you are today.

My name is Alex Albertsen, I am 22 years old and I am from Denmark. I am a friendly, positive, helpful, and very open minded person. In my free time, I enjoy playing computer games, and playing basketball with friends and others.

2. What is your background in education, culture, family and friends, etc?

I have studied in Denmark, since the beginning of basic school. I started in 0th grade when I was five, nearly six years old. I was going in the same school and class for 10 years, from 0th and all the way up to 9th grade. After this, I was still a bit unsecure of which direction I wanted to go with my study, so I toke 10th grade with me. Then I started on a Danish high school, where I decided to take a mathematical direction, because I always loved working with numbers. The educational system in Denmark is different from the Dutch in many ways. For example, we first start in school, in a bit older age (I was one of the early starters as a 5-6 year old). Besides that, then we also by law have to take the basic school education, which is the 10 years from 0th to 9th grade. The 10th grade is optional and free, and to get into high school we need certain grades.

My country is around the same size as the Netherlands, so we are not a very big country. Neither are we highly populated, we only got around 6-7 million citizens I believe. The Danish culture is looking very much like the Dutch culture on many points. Some of the similarities is for example that we have many people from different cultures living in our country, which makes us a very multinational country as well. We are also a Christian country, celebrating Christmas, and other Christian holidays. It is hard to define what Danish culture is, but we do have many small unique things that makes us Danish.

My whole family comes from Denmark. I have a mom and brother living in the capital, called Copenhagen. I have been living with my mom and brother for the most of my life. Besides my mom and brother in Copenhagen, I have my uncle, his fiancé and two cousins who are five and seven. My dad have been living in Norway since I was three, but came back to Denmark five years ago, and he now lives in Jutland (which also is in Denmark). I have a lot bigger family than that though, they are just spread widely around the country.

3. What are your abilities/strengths?

- I am good at math, and I like to deal with numbers.

- I am very open-minded.

- I am good at working with other people in small groups on 2-4 persons.

4. What are your weaknesses?

- One of my biggest weaknesses is that I sometimes get nervous during exams or big presentations, which can make an impact on my abilities to perform. I Think I might have improved a little but I would like to get over this fully.

- When groups become too big, then I find it hard to work with everybody at the same time.

- Im not very creative

5. What are your likes and dislikes?

Likes:

- Spending time with my girlfriend

- Reading interesting books/articles

- Sports, but mainly basketball

- Computer games

- Watching movies/series

- Music

- Mathematics

Dislikes

- Being nervous during presentations

Choices concerning your future

6. Why did you choose to study at Arnhem Business School

Since I was younger, I have always found it very attractive to take a study abroad. One and a half year ago, I met my girlfriend who lives in the Netherlands. When I had to make the choice of study, I thought that I could find a good school, and study near her living area. Now I can have a nice time studying here at Arnhem Business School, while I can live together with my girlfriend.

7. Why did you choose this particular Bachelor course

In the future, I would like to work in the financial sector. I like to work with numbers, and I’m good at analyzing them.

Learning goals

8. What would you like to achieve in your First lecture period at ABS? Write down two learning goals. Make sure they are concrete and it is clear what actions you will take to reach your goals (You can use the SMART method).

I would like to improve my presentation skills. When I have to make a bigger presentation, then I can become very nervous as I earlier mentioned. I can measure this, by asking my fellow classmates. I will start in the beginning of A-cluster, and see how much I can improve on my presentations until the end of A-cluster.

I would like to become more creative. I have never been very creative, but I think it is quite an important skill to have in many situations. I can measure this myself on any normal day, I should be able to feel, whether I got more creative or not. I will give myself the whole A-cluster, to improve on this goal as well.

My schedule

Furthermore some of these exams can be hard, and therefore it is also good that the exams and lectures are split evenly in the B cluster. I will have 3 exams in T3 and 4 exams in T4.

For the A cluster I will receive lessons from almost every subject throughout the whole cluster and have 6 exams in the T2.

Besides the spread of my exams, and the grouping of my related subjects close to each other in the exam periods, then I also believe that it is the best schedule I can create due to the weekly scheduels can be very unpredictable. For example MCO which I am going to follow throughout the whole A cluster is going to change day and time every week, at least for period 1. I will take dutch, and business ethics on top of this in the A cluster, and marketing will also be implemented in period 2 of the A cluster. Therefore with the unreliable schedule I would most likely miss some lessons if I take more into the A cluster.
