1.1.	I still smart a little at the slight. When you've suffered a great deal in life, each additional pain is both unbearable and trifling. My life is like a memento mori painting from European art: there is always a grinning skull at my side to remind me of the folly of human ambition. I mock this skull. I look at it and I say, "You've got the wrong fellow. You may not believe in life, but I don't believe in death. Move on!" (p5)

2.	Richard Parker has stayed with me. I've never forgotten him. Dare I say I miss him? I do. I miss him. I still see him in my dreams. They are nightmares mostly, but nightmares tinged with love. Such is the strangeness of the human heart. I still cannot understand how he could abandon me so unceremoniously, without any sort of goodbye, without looking back even once. That pain is like an axe that chops at my heart. (p6)

3.	To me, it was paradise on earth. I have nothing but the fondest memories of growing up in a zoo. I lived the life of a prince. What maharaja's son had such vast, luxuriant grounds to play about? What palace had such a menagerie? My alarm clock during my childhood was a pride of lions. They were no Swiss clocks, but the lions could be counted upon to roar their heads off between five-thirty and six every morning.(p9)

One might even argue that if an animal could choose with intelligence, it would opt for living in a zoo, since the major difference between a zoo and the wild is the absence of parasites and enemies and the abundance of food in the first, and their respective abundance and scarcity in the second.(p11)

Or he may have died yesterday here in Pondicherry in an orphanage. That's what some people say, Pi. When I was your age, I lived in bed, racked with polio. I asked myself every day, 'Where is God? Where is God? Where is God?' God never came. It wasn't God who saved me-it was medicine. Reason is my prophet and it tells me that as a watch stops, so we die. It's the end. If the watch doesn't work properly, it must be fixed here and now by us. One day we will take hold of the means of production and there will be justice on earth." (p16)

10.	I'll be honest about it. It is not atheists who get stuck in my craw, but agnostics. Doubt is useful for a while. We must all pass through the garden of Gethsemane. If Christ played with doubt, so must we. If Christ spent an anguished night in prayer, if He burst out from the Cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" then surely we are also permitted doubt. But we must move on. To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation. (p17)

Furthermore, the passage describes how many individuals living in a power/economically-imbalanced area possesses fears of impermanence and survival due to systematic inequity. In relation to the novel’s theme of freedom, the passage illustrates how lack of sustainability to an individual’s work and survival restricts their freedom - prompting them to seek better opportunities elsewhere. To Pi, the abandonment of his home marks the beginning of his struggles of isolation.
23.	These people fail to realize that it is on the inside that God must be defended, not on the outside. They should direct their anger at themselves. For evil in the open is but evil from within that has been let out. The main battlefield for good is not the open ground of the public arena but the small clearing of each heart. Meanwhile, the lot of widows and homeless children is very hard, and it is to their defence, not God's, that the self-righteous should rush.(p40)

This quote is saying that bothers zoos and religion take away freedom. Zoos are a place where wild animals are tamed and controlled, and religion, when practiced, is something that humans must abide by. When you practice a specific religion it takes away your freedom in a way. This quote connects to Pi because he is directly in contact with both of these things. His two majors in university are Zoology and religion studies, as well as the fact that he is a very religious man. Another interesting point about this a quote is that when Pi is alone on the life boat all he has is a tiger (which came from the zoo) and his faith in god.

-Nicholas

He can’t get enough of one faith so he discovers and learns about other ones( Christianity and Islam). This spiritual quote is a metaphor that describes how important religion is to Pi. Like a seed, his knowledge continues to grow. The two most important things in Pi’s life are his beliefs and his love for animals. He explains the importance of religion in his life, his views on religion and how they affect his life. Most of the story is based on his journey and how he uses his spiritual and religious beliefs to adapt to different situations along with helping him overcome issues.
Haeeda R

Pi states that zoos are cultural institutions, institutions that are usually charitable or public. Zoos are not a good business for people who want a large profit. They are a service to the public, and those interested in popular sciences. Pi does not care much about this, but his father, who runs the zoo, is dissatisfied. Obviously, if someone is running a risky business like a zoo, they want security of getting decent profits from all the time and effort they put into it.
Taha Shaikh

That's what some people say, Pi. When I was your age, I lived in bed, racked with polio. I asked myself every day, 'Where is God? Where is God? Where is God?' God never came. It wasn't God who saved me-it was medicine. Reason is my prophet and it tells me that as a watch stops, so we die. It's the end. We can also infer that he is not religious because he states that the zoo is equivalent to place of worship for him.

You should let technology help you so you can progress and not turn to dinosaurhood.

This quote shows Pi’s dad’s perspective on technological advancements. He believes that as the world progresses, one should progress with it. He remains his point by saying that progress is unstoppable and one should not try to fight it, rather you should let it aid you and your society. He also mentions that the resistance of technology and good ideas leads to dinosaurhood, meaning the people who do so are holding themselves back and will lead themselves to extinction.

This quote emphasizes the them of change in the story as it shows how Pi’s family is open to change, and modern ways. This explains Pi’s character in how he rises above his unfortunate circumstances and grows stronger, rather than hold himself back and lead to his death and demise(dinosaurhood).

Metaphor: Progress is a drumbeat to which we all must march. He compares progress to a drumbeat without using like it as. Symbolism: Dinosaur/dinosaurhood = extinction, old, and not modern.

Pi’s family is open to change, and goes by the rule/statement of “desperate times call for desperate measures.” During the emergency in India at that time, Prime Minister Indira Ghandi gave herself complete power and her opponents were jailed, abused, and tortured. She made India and its economy unstable, and was setting them back in time rather than progressing into the future and change. Pi’s family needed to move as they could no longer keep the zoo and were going to live unstable lives if they had stayed. The desperate measure in this case is them moving to Canada and risking their lives. Pi faces another situation like this in which he exudes similarity to his parents as he eats meat and does many other thing unusual to himself in order to survive.

They were no Swiss clocks, but the lions could be counted upon to roar their heads off between five-thirty and six every morning.(p9)

1.Literal meaning
The quote simply explains how he viewed the zoo as a wonderful place and even compared it to heaven on earth. He also speaks of how he views himself, status wise , in the zoo
2.Analyze and Infer
I think that he saw the zoo as paradise as it was also where he was more comfortable compared to his school and other public places where he was bullied for his uniqie name. It shows how he felt growing up, how he felt about the zoo being his home and how he felt living there.
4. The literary devices in the quote are imagery when describing the grounds of the zoo and also analogy when he compared the zoo to paradise on earth.
- Monique Manning

He is still deeply affected by the events that took place at sea, and still has a deep connection with richard Parker. When saying his story, he sometimes becomes conflicted with himself because of the disrupt memories he has. The memories are forever stuck with him. Even if telling the story brings back bad thoughts, feelings, and memories; he still wants his story heard.

After analyzing this quote, it is seen that it’s hard for Pi to talk about the traumatizing events that took place.

"The answer is the same the world over: people move in the hope of a better life" (pg45)
1. This quote discusses the survival instincts of both animals and humans. When humans know they could have a safer, easier, or healthier life somewhere else they are drawn to it naturally. Some one living in a developing country would envy someone living in Canada (or a more developed country) because of the hope that their overall life, or the lives of their family members would be improved.
2. Using the word hope in this quote shows that Pi's family knows that even if they do move to Canada, a better life is not promised. Pi's father, who is upset with the current Indian government decided to move his family to Canada based on the hope it would provide them with a better government and life for his children. I think this line hints at a future conflict with Pi's family. I believe this because even though they hope, on the voyage over or when they get their, the family will most likely run into problems.
3. This line tells us about Pi's outlook on life; that he has hope for a better life, yet he is realistic and knows that it will not come easy or fast. I also believe it infers that there will be a theme of hope throughout the story. I would say this because of the length and the trip and the fact that it is on a boat, makes me suspect a situation where Pi or his family will have to overcome an obstacle while also keeping their hopes high.
4. There are no literary devices in this line.

1) The literal meaning of this quote is that, having someone to believe in or hope about is a reward that, everyone who believes in an all powerful deity or possesses that knowledge should appreciate.
2) This quote is said after Pi recalls memories of what he considered close encounters with a god. One such story was when he was walking and he could see the sea to his left and many other beautiful things in nature and he felt peaceful because he believed he was in heaven and near Allah. Another incident was when he was walking in the snow and he saw the Virgin Mary smiling at him which gave him a better mood and made him feel warm. Pi mentions this quote after 2 chapters of him practicing different religions. As Pi mentioned he was lonely while in Canada so he found comfort in believing in these many gods.
3) This quote relates to the character Pi because it shows how open minded he is as he is ready to practice all religions. It also gives the reader a little incite on his personality as he is a kind person never showing any hate towards the many religions and feeling comfort in the “... presence of God ... finest of rewards”. This quote also represents one of the themes of the story which is the nature of religious beliefs. This quote expands on one of the main reasons people believe in god which is for the hope and hoping for rewards.
4) NA.

Quote 13 "it is not a question of constructing an imitation of conditions in the wild as of getting to the essence of these conditions. Everything in an enclosure must be just-right in other words, within the limits of the animal's capacity to adapt. A plague upon bad zoos with bad enclosures! They bring all zoos into Disrepute" (P44).
The literal meaning of this quote is that zoo enclosures shouldn't fully replicate the animal's environment. They should be built with the animal's basic necessities in mind (e.g. food, water, shelter, environmental tolerances [temperature, aridity]). if the enclosure is built to these standards the animal is able to adapt with little to no repercussions.
This quote touches on something that all animals (including humans) have to deal with when their environment is suddenly changed. all animals have an ability to adapt, as long as their basic necessities are met. Even if the animal is an entirely different environment.
This quote touches on the themes of survival and freedom of the book. as it discusses what all animals require to survive. how, in order for an animal to survive, the ecologies of its native environment and its current environment must be delicately balance in order to ensure the survival of the animal. It also touches upon Freedom as this quote is backing the point that animals will not attempt to flee their environment as long as they feel safe and have their needs taken care of. if its needs are not met, then the animal will to all in its power to escape to a more suitable environment.

“One might even argue that if an animal could choose with intelligence, it would opt for living in a zoo, since the major difference between a zoo and the wild is the absence of parasites and enemies and the abundance of food in the first, and their respective abundance and scarcity in the second.”

1) The literal meaning of this quote is that if the animals were given the choice on whether to live in a zoo or the wild, they would choose the zoo. Unlike the wild, the zoo has an absence of parasites and enemies and does not have a shortage to food supply.

2) This quote shows the contrast between animals in the wild and animals in the zoo. People normally think that zoos constrain animals from freedom because of their cages, but Pi is a defender of the zoo and sees animals in a different way. This train of thought draws the reader in and grows suspense about his ordeal that is unknown in the story so far and shows Pi’s knowledge on animals as a zoologist. There are many instances in the story where Pi talks about how animals might feel in certain situations and seems to care deeply about them. This gives the reader a hint of what he went through and possibly had something to do with animals or an animal.

3) This quote relates to the theme of fear. Pi talks about how if animals were given the choice, they would pick the zoo in terms of survival. In the wild, there is more danger, fear of predators, scarcity of food and enemies whereas in the zoo, the animals are well fed and kept from harms way.

4)

6. “I know zoos are no longer in people’s good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.”

1) The literal meaning behind this quote is that zoos and religions in general face similar problems. Pi is saying that freedom is an illusion and that people and zoo animals both are caught up in that illusion and believe that they don’t have freedom because zoos and religions restrict them.

2) People believe that both religions and zoos take away freedom. In the case of religion, it takes away freedom from people as they have to follow the principles and values of the religion and follow certain restrictions. In the same way, zoos take away freedom from animals as they are made to live in a closed and controlled environment. I can infer from this that religion and zoos play a major part in his life and that he deeply cares about them. I can also take away from this that he related these two thoughts to his own personal beliefs.

3) It relates to the theme as one of the major themes in the story is about belief and faith in god and religion and the quote talks about religion and how it takes away the freedom from people, so it shows how his views on religion changes and evolves throughout the story. With man-made weaponary, humans are even more vicious and unstoppable compared to simple minded animals.
3) This quote relates most to the theme of fear. Something within their territory has frightened them-the intrusion of an enemy, the assault of a dominant animal, a startling noise-and set off a flight reaction."
1.) The literal meaning in this quote is that animals are scared of us humans, more than we are scared of them.
2.) This quote means that humans are not always aware of the fear they cause. The hurt they induce onto other animals is not something they think of because of our fears of these animals.
3.) The quote relates to the theme and character since it mentions animals feeling out of place and lost. This relates to the character because in the book pie talks about himself as being "lost" and like an outsider, which is sated in this quote as the animals feeling threatened and lost.
4.) The literary device in this quote is foreshadowing. This is because in the quote it mentions the animals running "from" what threatens them, and later in the book Pi the main character, is trapped on a boat with a tiger and he wants to flee from the tiger but he is unable to since he is trapped on a boat in the middle of the ocean.

The way he speaks of his nightmares must also show that he must still have long lasting affects from the struggles he has been through.

3)It is clear that Richard must have really affected Pi’s character throughout his journey and struggles. The quote shows how Pi preserves animals as people, and how he connects well with them. As well as people do with one another. Pie also talked about his dreams being nightmares “tinged with love.” This relates to the theme as it shows how the struggles and suffering he went through has affected him for the rest of his life. He has gained a new fear, that roams in his nightmares, and the theme is mainly about human fear and faith.

4)There is also a simile used at the end of the quote, that describes the extent of the pain he felt when Richard left him. This simile uses literal pain, which helps to show that he missed Richard, as much a person would miss there family.

Quote 2

The literal meaning of the quote is zoologists and theologian should always put themselves at the centre of everything.
2. The meaning of the quote is how a zoologist and theologian’s one mistake is believing that they are the centre of all.
3. This quote relates to the characters of the story because Pi is a zoologist and theologist thus he is speaking from experience when he says “putting ourselves at the centre of everything”. It also relates to the theme of the story as one of the themes is belief and religion, in religion it is believed that Gods are at the centre of everything.
4. In the quote “putting ourselves at the centre of everything” is an idiom.

To be safe around animals, one must be able to think like an animal and know what the animals need.
3) This quote relates to the theme of personal growth and survival.

1. The literal meaning of this quote is that Pi feels annoyed at not getting the award, especially after going through so much trauma. Since he has experienced so much suffering, this small amount of suffering, feeling disappointed at not getting the award, is unbearable on top of everything else he has experienced.

2. By analyzing the quote, it can be inferred that when he imagines the skull, he is imagining death, and how death looks down upon life. The grinning skull is mocking life, and so Pi, who believes in life, mocks the skull. As Pi survived a very dangerous experience that could have killed him, he values life and sees meaning in life, and does not believe that life is meaningless because it will end in death. He tells death to “move on” because he has defied death once already and will not allow death to continue to bring him down and ruin his life after he has beaten death by surviving.

3. This quote relates to the theme because Pi references how he “does not believe in death”. After Pi survived being isolated in the middle of the ocean, he became very religious and came to believe in a higher power. He now has faith and believes in life, rather than fearing death. This quote relates to the main character, Pi, because it shows how Pi was changed by the experiences he went through, and how he is now resilient and feels able to face death.

4. The grinning skull Pi imagines at his side throughout his life represents death, and how he has come so close to death. This is also personification, as Pi imagines death as a grinning skull that does not believe in life.

28. "The worst of it," he says, "is that I can hardly remember what my mother looks like any more. I can see her in my mind, but it's fleeting. As soon as I try to have a good look at her, she fades. It's the same with her voice. If I saw her again in the street, it would all come back. But that's not likely to happen. It's very sad not to remember what your mother looks like." (P52)

This quote explains how he—Mamaji—can no longer remember the face of the voice of his own mother. Mamaji mentions that if he saw his mother again, memories would flourish. However, he says seeing her again is unlikely, implying that his mother is far away from him, or his mother had passed away. The fact that Mamaji is admitting that he is slowly forgetting his mother, means that it must have been a long time since the two have met. It is quite disappointing for the son since the mother figure plays a major role for one's beliefs, morals, and overall character. Forgetting such an important person that has impacted one's life may affect them emotionally. - Sonya Truong

1. The literal meaning of this quote is that you must confide in technology and let it help you for the better. You need to be able to progress otherwise you will be stuck in dinosaurhood( the old times).
2. This quote shows Pi's dads perspective on how he views technological advances and progress. This quote is kind of like survival of the fittest, if everyone else is progressing then you should be as well otherwise you will be stuck in "dinosaurhood" which is most likely another way of saying the olden times or even extinction. If people resist progress good things will not come of it. You should just accept it.
3. This quotes shows that Pi and his family are willing to change if needed and also if needed to change to modern ways so they keep progressing with society and technology. If Pi and his family do not adapt, even though he has had a lower upbringing due to his class, his family must progress, his family is open to change which is one of the main themes
4. Some of the literary devices is this quote are metaphors and symbolism. The metaphor in this story is when he says " progress is a drumbeat to which we all must march". We know this is a metaphor because is does not use the words like or as. There is also symbolism in this quote, it is the dinosaurhood which can be interpreted as old, ancient, extinct or in other words not modern times and olden ages

“At times he gets agitated. It’s nothing I say (I say very little). Its his own story that does it. Memory is an ocean and he bobs on its surface. I worry that he’ll want to stop. But he wants to tell me his story. He goes on. After all these years, Richard Parker still preys on his mind”

1. The literal meaning behind this quote is how Piscine feels about Richard Parker and his story. It shows that Piscine still remembers Richard Parker and the story with him “after all these years” and that he still constantly thinks about him. He wants his story to be heard despite the negativity, bad thoughts, and memories that it brings to him and the mental/physical connection he had with Richard Parker.
2. Analyzing this quote shows that Pi still struggles with telling his story about what happened and giving detail on events that occurred. This quote shows that the events have changed him in a way and that the thoughts and memories seem to make there way into his thoughts whether he wants them to or not. As a result of these events, he will now always have Richard Parker as part of his life simply because of the mental and emotional impact the tiger has imprinted.
3. With the theme of the story being a story of life associated with fear and faith, this quote has great significance. This quote talks about the story of Pi and how it has impacted his life and how it's shaped him to the person he is after these events took place. This quote basically caps up his hardest and most challeging experiences of life in a few short sentences with which the whole journey itself relates to the theme directly.
4. The library device used in this quote is metaphor. Metaphor is demonstrated through the part of the quote that reads " Memory is an ocean and he bobs on its surface". This talks about Richard Parker bobbing on the top of the ocean which is Pi's memory and constantly pops up in his mind.

1. The literal quote is Pi explaining that people who are agnostic (don’t believe in god or science, and have no stance on it) bother him. He thinks they live their lives stagnant.

3. It shows Pi’s deep love for faith and the importance in believing in something is to his life. As a person who is deeply rooted in faith and science; equally believing in both he has an intricate belief system that is essential to who he is as a person. For an “agnostic” to continually doubt he believes that is more foolish and will stop them from leading a full life by Pi’s standards.

4. Literary terms- Garden of Gethsemane is allusion because its reference to the bible the place where Jesus doubted gods plans for him before he was about to be crucified.

17. "A germ of religious exaltation, no bigger than a mustard seed, was sown in me and left to germinate. It has never stopped growing since that day."

1. The literal meaning behind the quote is Pi’s love and passion for religion. When he mentions how it was a small seed he is talking about how this passion is not a recent development. The “seed” represents his original interest in the different religions and germination are the other characters explaining their respective religions.

2. The quote shows that Pi is very passionate about religion, for example, using the word exaltation to show his extreme happiness. Using the seed metaphor shows his willingness to grow and learn about different cultures and religions, much like a seed grows into a flower after its germinated. Like a plant his passion for religion has many branches such as his interest the different religions for example his interest in becoming Christian and becoming a Muslim. Inference can be drawn that much like some plants Pi's passion and interest will stop growing and he may find something new.

3. The quote relates to the theme faith because it shows that religion is very a heavy part of Pi’s life and thus having faith in religion. It also relates to the theme because Pi believes that it is important to have something to believe in or something to have faith in that is greater than yourself. He also seems to have faith that his passion and interest for religion will continue to grow each day because it hasn't stopped thus far. Characters play an important role because they sparked his interest in religion. An example of two characters that sparked pies interest in religion are Father Martin and Mr. Satish Kumar who introduced him to Christianity and Islam.

4. The main literary device that is used is metaphor. The metaphor in this quote is the use of seeds as a vehicle for describing growth.

Sarah O'Neil

1) The literal meaning behind this quote is that the person Pi is referring to has enough food to last him approx 900 days (the siege lasted 900 days)

2) The siege lasted about 3 years. It was important in two ways. One being it was named after the founder of the Russian Revolution and it barred passage to Moscow. There were not enough supplied sent to Leningrad during this time and many people starved to death. Food is necessary to survival and Pi's suffering must have had something to do with the lack of food, since he hoards it so internally. It is indeed a reserve of food to be used in emergencies. This comes from Pi's experiences. The significance can be that the stacks of food are to prevent an event similar to the siege from happening to himself. It is a safety net, a reassurance that everything is okay, and if it is not he will be able to cope.

3) This quote related to the theme of fear, since the person Pi is talking about is fearful that something like the siege might happen again and therefore, is prepared if it does.

4) In the quote, the literary device of allusion is used when referring to the Siege of Leningrad that took place in what is currently named Saint Petersburg (Leningrad) from September 8th, 1941 to January 27th, 1944, during WWII.

5) One possibility i s that the man being described is Mamaji, and is being described by Pi himself. However, this would have been in Pi's childhood because he moved to Canada when he was in college, maybe even high school.

If they are an alpha animal, they live a superior life, as they dominate their territory. However, if they are a beta animal, they live an inferior live and follow their alpha.

Theme: This quote relates to the theme of power. Animals who are controlled by an alpha animal have limited freedom. Their lives are controlled and they constantly receive orders from their leader. For instance, the circus trainer invades the lion’s privacy and pressures it to perform tricks for the audience. The feeling of being controlled changes their behaviours and become offensive.

Literary devices.

Foreshadowing: Later in the chapter, Pi uses the trainer's techniques to handle the lion when he gets stranded in a boat with the lion.

Symbolism: The dominance of the lion’s territory symbolizes Britain's dominance of India

Analyze and Infer.

Animals live their lives based on their social rank. In the 20th Century, people in society were treated based on their social status. Privileged families received exalted respect compared to working class families. As a result, some working-class families confined themselves from the community to avoid interacting with other people. For instance, the animals developed aggressive behaviour due to social isolation and insecurity.

"Animals in the wild lead lives of compulsion and necessity within an unforgiving social hierarchy in an environment where the supply of fear is high and the supply of food is low and where territory must constantly be defended and parasites forever endured. What is the meaning of freedom in such a context?"

The literal meaning of the quote explains the lack of freedom wild animals experience within an “unforgiving social hierarchy” due to an indomitable will to live.

     2. The unforgiving social hierarchy animals live in, otherwise known as the food chain, is the statistical ranking of survival of the fittest and is determined by who hunts who. The high supply of fear and low supply of food refers to an animal’s position in the food chain being both prey and predator, living in inescapable fear of the superior, while hunting the inferior. This overpowering mentality restricts animals from experiencing feelings of freedom.

    3. The theme of fear is evident in this quote. The quote describes an animal’s uncontrollable instinct to survive and the fear that feeds it.

    4. N/A

The literal meaning of the given quote is that Mr.Patel has a sufficient supply of food that will last him for 900 days as the siege of Leningrad lasted that long.

Further analysis of the given quote tells the story of how WW2 caused the city of Leningrad,Russia to be surrounded and the siege began. Due to the siege, food supplies were distraught because the civilians of Leningrad refused to surrender. From this analysis an inference can be made about how Mr.Patel has become a source of safety and food for Pi.

Mr.Patels character shines through this quote.Through analysis and based on the context of his traumatic experiences, his character is prepared and ready for the worst. The theme of fear is evident through this quote as he has a strong fear of not being able to survive or not fitting the category “ survival of the fittest” and that is why he is seen stocking up on food.
