Growing up, I have already been introduced to various sculptures locally. My understanding was very simple and basic. I interpreted the beauty of these sculptures through their subject and details. I was only aware of the obvious elements and simple interpretation of the sculptures.
i also know different materials used for sculpture like marble, clay, stone, metal or gold. Different eras have different style. I know the famous filipino sculpture, Napoleon Abueva because I am familiar with his works in UP.
I always use the term "3D" whenever i describe a sculpture because the solid block really pops out from the space where it stands.
i am much amazed on the intrinsic details and the complicated designs put in the work. I always ask myself on how long could the artists finish their job.
I also know the significance of sculpture in maintaining tradition and culture. These also show who are the prominent leaders and significant life story they had.
Sculpture is really a fun art to study.

Taking up lessons in Sculpture, I have gained new insights and knowledge on how to appreciate sculptures. I have learned that when describing a sculpture we must first start with the formal aspects of the piece:
1.) Subject Representation (pointing out the obvious and interesting parts of the subject)
2.) Materials and Technique applied .
3.) lastly, the dominant elements and principles of the piece. (Lines, volume, space, contrast, proportion, color and many more.)
I have also learned about the different eras and the specific characteristics:
1.) Classical
2.) Renaissance
3.) Baroque
4.) Modern
The transition from these era also show how the techniques evolve. From the plain and stoic looks, the subjects became more vibrant, more movements came and emotions can be now be more seen.
