It argues that language is an inseparable part of all human action, intimately connected to all other forms of action, physical, social and symbolic. Language is thus an expression of agency, embodied and embedded in the environment. (van Lier)

The "Language and the Common Core State Standards" article describes a very good example. Essentially a student writes part of a paper and read it out loud. Reading the paper out loud can be described as action. He doesn't read it flawlessly, he has grammatical errors, but he does a very good job standing up and reading it himself.

I am watching a documentary for another class right now called TEACH. It talks about alternative teaching methods. One of the best included in the film is called "360 degree math." The teacher puts up whiteboards all around the room and lets the students do the math while she stands in the middle and watches each one. This is learning as action because the students are listening to a lecture, they are practicing.
