The teacher is the employee who must be well trained and effective at their job. There is also a need for the CEO or the principal who ensures that the teachers are taken care of, have the resources they need, and runs a well-oiled company.

The students will learn if you are serious or not, if you care about them or not, if you will be easy to manipulate or not, etc. How you set things up the first days is vital to success.

Just because your classroom is consistent doesn't mean it can never change or be adapted. For example, in sports games, the coach will provide the specific plays that he teaches his players to be prepared for. They start with the specific starting plays, then adapt and use different ones based on how the other team reacts. It is similar for students. You will show them how to act in different scenarios, and sometimes they will need different management plans based on what is going on.

4 stages of teaching

fantasy: teachers just want to relate to students and be their friend. They think all they need to do for students to succeed is to entertain with activities and build relationships. They don't talk about standards, procedures, etc.
survival: these teachers are just striving for their next paycheck. They look for anything that will keep the students busy and quiet (busy work) such as worksheets, crosswords, movies, etc.
mastery: these teachers know how to implement classroom management and effective lesson practices. They have high expectations and their goal is student learning and achievement.
impact: these teachers impact the lives of their students long term and truly make a difference in their lives. This is what teaching is all about

Are induction programs for first year teachers common? I've never heard of this before I've only heard of having a mentor. I thought that student teaching was our "training" kind of like an internship.

Creating a consistent environment is vital. Many students come from chaotic, unorganized homes. One of the things kids need most is consistency. This helps the teacher and the student because it builds their relationship (showing that the teacher is someone who's words can be trusted and the student respects that), it gives an opportunity for taking accountability (student can admit when they messed up and the teacher can too), and also eases anxiety (because everyone knows exactly what is expected of them).

Teachers are the most impactful to student success, not technology, programs, or fads. Research shows that the way the teacher teaches and strategies he/she uses is what makes the difference. Some methods include stopping a video intermittently to ask questions/promote discussion, having questions located throughout a reading instead of all listed at the end, and using rubrics or writing down standards at the beginning of a lesson or project to show exactly what is expected.
