Rochester is a victim of circumstance and many people who have wronged him, Bertha is the villain through being a culmination of all of the villain's efforts against Rochester and holds Rochester (unintentionally) in a marriage he doesn't want, and Jane is a bystander who can't really do much.

Rochester abandons Bertha once he learns of her insanity and takes advantage of Jane by pursuing a relationship with her without telling her of his secret marriage. Bertha's insanity is almost certainly worsened by her isolation, and Jane is a bystander because she simply chooses to leave and take care of herself after learning about the situation with Rochester and Bertha.

By definition Bertha Mason is the villian in Jane Eyre, because she caused physical harm towards Mr Rochester and Thornfield.


Bystander: Jane Eyre

She doesn't know about the situation and leaves when she does find out.

Mr. Rochester is primarily a villain because he deceived and locked Bertha away to start a "new life" by pursuing Jane into bigamy. However, he also feigns the victim role because he's "desperate for love" and was part of a marriage trap. Jane is the BYSTANDER in this instance because she can't stand up to something she was lied to about.
