In these two chapters, Doctor Thorne learns that his niece's other uncle, Roger Scatcherd, has made him the executor of his estate. Inside of his will he has stipulated that if something should happen to his son, his only heir, then the bulk of his estate, which includes $200K, will go to his sister's first born child, which just so happens to be Doctor Thorne's niece Mary. Doctor Thorne spends the bulk of the remaining chapters going back and forth debating on whether he should tell Roger about this development.

The way Trollope continues to add dimension to the story through multiple plot lines always impresses me, but this one in particular I was surprised by. I knew that Mary would need to inherit in some way so that she could be with her obvious future man, Frank Gresham the younger, but I truly did not know how it was going to happen. I am curious to know if Roger Scatcherd, her unknown uncle, will come to be known to her or if he will die before she or Doctor Thorne can make him aware of the situation.

In this chapter, we start off by meeting a man who sneaks into a family home and kills a woman and a man. Following he tries to kill a little child and finds that he is not in his bed but rather outside because the killer left the door open. The child then stumbles upon a graveyard in which he doesn't know that someone is out to get him. The child then meets these ghosts that are the Owens. The Owens got a message from his dying parents to protect him and for the rest of the chapter they manage to do just that while having the killer not find him.

In the beginning, I was very intrigued with how the story was going. The story wasn't afraid to be a little gory. I came across while reading that we never found out that we never knew the killer's name and I liked that choice because he's important but not enough to be remembered for who he is rather than the action he commented. I am not a fan of the Owens naming the boy "nobody" I thought it was too on the nose and too quirky for my taste. Lastly while reading I realized this book would make a great adaptation for a movie.

The Owens, Mrs.Owens in particular, had great morals and an overall strong-willed character. Her knowing the struggle to take care of a child while being dead and cant leave a graveyard but doing it anyway knowing the precautions because she promised to the already dead mother just makes me like the character and the story more.
