Know a teacher who is a champion of inclusion? A school that ensures all students are included? This is an opportunity to celebrate and tell the world about it!

Northwest School Division has partnered with a local organization that supports families who are raising children with disabilities, PACE, to improve the quality of inclusive education. Facilitation to enhance effective communication around a student's inclusive education is provided by a Communication Support Associate for the entire team, family and school together. The project is in its third year and going strong. Feedback from this project has confirmed that improving communication between schools and families has a direct impact on increasing the quality of inclusive education. Big win for our community.

My son’s kindergarten teacher at Flex Ed (a private school offering strictly online teaching for K-12) have worked hard, both with my son and with our whole family, in order to find ways to connect with him virtually despite his social communication deficits. For the first time in his life, an educator was able to successfully assess his literacy skills, and did this despite being completely online! Her creative and innovative ideas have helped my son advance well beyond one usual school year already, and the school’s flexibility has allowed him to stay with his class despite setbacks from his medical needs.

We need to give a shout out to a team of people at William Grayson School. Our grade 1 teacher and the team that surrounds her have went above and beyond for one of our students. From working with our K teacher to come up with play based ideas to match curriculum outcomes to making a fun filled sensory room for him to explore and grow and learn! They are attending PD, holding extra meetings, and thinking outside the box for ways to have this student be included, excited, and eventually be able to be with his peers more often.
Everyday, they work tirelessly and collaboratively to meet his needs. It is always about him and never about them.
The days of a teacher can be long, lonely, and draining but this team makes it fun and energizing. They make it promising. They make it inclusive.
So, THANK YOU! Thank you to this team and all of the staff at William Grayson that come in everyday trying their best to do what is best for our students and their families. You ALL are heros!

At CES we have seen the benefits of regular family-staff communication, strength and data-based planning for our students. One of our many success stories is KC. KC has accomplished communication, academic and communication goals in a very short amount of time. KC is an important member of our school and our Grade ½ classroom. We believe every child can learn and be successful in our inclusive school.
