Chasing Shadows by The Comsat Angels

I found when looking at most post-punk bands that their digipaks usually echoed the design that they had done for their previous album cover. This can be seen with The Comsat Angels' 1986 album 'Chasing Shadows' which was re-released in 2011 with the same cover.

Significant changes are made to many of the album re-released by The Comsat Angels such as additional songs which had not been featured on the previous albums, demos from the first recordings of the album and different versions of the song played on radio such as John Peel and Richard Skinner versions when Comsat Angels played live in the studio with them.

'Chasing Shadows' is an interesting digipak also as it had another album within the album. This is the Comsat Angels' 1990 album 'Fire on the Moon' which they released under the name 'Dream Command' and only sold with minimal success in the Netherlands. Since not many fans knew about this album, it seemed like a good idea to allow fans an extra bonus album that they had never heard of before.

However, this is not as personal as a note or pictures of the band and only adds new content in the form of songs and albums rather than pictures and behind the scenes footage as the band always used to focus on being a musician rather than trying to be a popular artist.

Cast in Steel by a-ha

To pick an example from another genre such as Alternative Rock and New Wave, I found a-ha's most recent album from 2015, 'Cast in Steel' had not only done a digipak but one that any fan of a-ha would be pleased with.

The original digipak provided the normal album with nothing much else included and only the original 12 songs from the album. This included all three singles that the album had and the extra songs that they had also recorded for the album.

The Extension pack had an extra cd filled with 6 new tracks along with the same previous 12 songs cd. This allows fans to enjoy all of the new music created by a-ha for the album and this includes remixes from their previous 2009 album, 'The Foot of the Mountain'. The pack also includes a poster of the album

Along with this, the album had a metal box to store things in, a picture of the band presumably from when they were recording the record or on tour with it and an exclusive lanyard with a small version of the album cover on the end of it. This makes the digipak far more personal than the previous a-ha and Comsat Angels digipak as it gives more to the purchaser than just the songs and gives them an entire experience of the album in question

A Very British Synthesizer Group by The Human League

This example again from the Post-punk genre goes above and beyond and while not going with the same thing as materialistic as Cast in Steel's digipak it adds both remixes and stories.

The album features the storyline of the Human League and takes the reader through each stage of success and failure and each member joining and leaving the band and who is left for the creation of the album today. This shown through text and pictures showing the times they went through.

The digipak relies heavily on remixes of songs such as their own by creating fast versions and twisted versions in order to show how the song can be changed and seen in a different way and want to give their fans a new experience rather than repackaging old material.

This results in many different changes to songs and gives an authentic feel as if the band looked over the creation of it rather than just a generic compilation album and this adds to the personal feel of the album. The references and storytelling also makes it feel like a biography written by each of the band members and is told as if the person was there
