Lily's relationship with the bees is important to the story because Lily connects with the bees on a much deeper level. They give her tranquility and bring her ease but also help bring her closer to other characters. While she was living with T-Ray, she'd wait for the bees to come into her room at night. This normal routine gave her a sense of relief and calmness: "They lapped around my body creating the perfect whirlwind cloud" (4)
When August and Lily were taking care of the bees, Lily says that her "mind became unnaturally calm , as if part of me had lifted right up out of my body and was sitting on a tree limb watching the spectacle from a safe distance" (150).
Lily's relationship with the bees helps Lily's relationship with August because they have something in common that they both love: "Rescuing the bees took us the entire morning" (166).

T. Ray: Don’t run away!!

Lily: I'm running to the top 🏃😤 grind never stops 💯👌all day❗ Ain't no stopping me👏✊

Since Lily's childhood, her father, T. Ray, had never really acted as a father figure to her. It didn't help that her mother died when she was 4 years old, leaving her to bear living with T. Ray. Daily life with T. Ray consisted of mental and physical abuse toward Lily. T. Ray attacks Lily verbally as stated in the book by T. Ray, "'I guess they must have flown out of that cuckoo clock you call a brain'" (pg. 5). He insults Lily's intelligence and ability to do anything worthwhile in life, putting a feeling of inferiority in her. T. Ray also uses words to instill fear within Lily, so that she could never think to rebel against him. As T. Ray states in the book, "'You wake me up again, Lily, and I'll get out the Martha Whites, you hear me?'" (pg. 5). Then Lily's thoughts toward this were, "Martha Whites were a form of punishment only T. Ray could have dreamed up. I shut my mouth instantly" (pg.5). This shows how T. Ray has taken control of Lily's mindset in order to make her do as he says without having to put more effort into ordering her around. T. Ray's carelessness toward Lily makes her feel worthless and lesser than others--she developed a lack of confidence. As stated in the book, "He didn't believe in slumber parties or sock hops, which wasn't a big concern as I never got invited to them anyway, but he refused to drive me to town for football games, pep rallies, or Beta Club car washes, which were held on Saturdays. He did not care that I wore clothes I made for myself in home economics class ... I might as well have worn a sign on my back: I AM NOT POPULAR AND NEVER WILL BE" (pg. 8). T.Ray refuses to give Lily the chance to live life and gain great experiences, yet he knows he is the only one who is there for her that can do such things, like driving her around, buying her DECENT clothes, and other things. T. Ray even tries to block her educating herself, as stated in the book, "T. Ray refused to let me bring books out here and read ... I think he believed it would stir up ideas of college, which he thought a waste of money for girls, even if they did, like me, score the highest number a human being can get on their verbal altitude test" (pg. 15). He is holding her back from improving herself, which would affect her whole life in places such as finding a good job, being intelligent, and believing she cannot achieve higher that others due to her gender alone. Lily's thoughts show how insecure she had been about herself, "It took me a month to get over the shock of having life possibilities" (pg. 16). She thought she wouldn't get anywhere in life due to T. Ray always insulting her intelligence. This horrible treatment from T. Ray caused Lily to make the decision to run away and seek a better life. T. Ray continuously teased Lily about how little her mother cared for her, "He laughed again. 'The woman could have cared less about you'" (pg. 39). Lily refused to believe such a thing, leading her to want to follow the Black Mary she had found in her mother's belongings. This lead her to go Tiburon and live with the sisters, meeting all the people who have developed her character more than she knew T. Ray ever could have.

Lily and June

The relationship between Lily and June is very tense. Neither of them like each other very much because of separate reasons. When June and Lily first meet June already feels displeased with Lily's presence, "I wished June with her whip would grin, too, but she only looked annoyed." (69). From the get-go June and Lily don't get along according to Lily. Later we learn why this is: "'But she's white August' This was a great revelation-not that I was white but that it seemed that June might not want me here because of my skin color" (87). It's understandable how June would be weary of Lily. It's the 1960s, racial tensions are high and the Civil Rights Movement is gaining more traction. When June denies Lily the Black Mary is looks as if June is a little more than weary, "As I rose from my chair, my head was still swimming some. I walked toward Black Mary with my hand lifted. But just as I was about to reach her, June stopped playing" (111). June and Lily's rocky relationship will show if they can be dynamic characters and end up being at least a little more tolerable with each other. Their relationship move the story along because it puts the race tensions on display and will help Lily understand how it feels to be disliked because of race, even if it isn't to the extent that June or Rosaleen would have to endure.
