Calypso was a nymph goddess and the daughter of the Titan god Atlas and Tethys. Atlas’ nymph daughters were beautiful goddesses, including Calypso although she didn’t display her beauty. She wore a certain day in a long silvery mantle and golden belt and veil. The Greek word καλύπτω relates to her name, meaning “to conceal”. Calypso had negative and positive associations in Greek mythology: “a concealer and seductress” (Greek Myths & Greek Mythology). When the Titans and Olympians fought, Calypso supported her father; after the Titans were defeated, Atlas had to carry the weight of the sky on his back. On the other hand, Olympians cursed Calypso to the island of Ogygia (somewhere in western Mediterranean Sea) to punish her; she couldn’t age or leave the island. Every thousand years, a hero would land on Ogygia and Calypso would care for him, eventually falling in love with him, but then he would leave and break her heart. Besides these men and her invisible servants, she had no company and was often alone.

How Calypso functions in the Odyssey

Odysseus washed up on Calypso’s island, Ogygia, after drifting for nine days at sea because he had lost his ship and men to monsters from Italy and Sicily on his trip from Troy. Calypso welcomed him and fell in love with Odysseus; she attempted to make him her immortal husband and give him eternal youth and truly tested his loyalty but Odysseus still yearned for his wife, Penelope. "I know fully well of myself that wise Penelope is meaner to look upon than you in comeliness and in stature, for she is a mortal, while you are immortal and ageless. But even so I wish and long day by day to reach my home, and to see the day of my return." (Odysseus to Calypso 3. Homer Odyssey 5.220) She made him her lover and together Odysseus remained on the island for seven years. They had two kids: Nausithous and Nausinous. Athena asked Zeus to save Odysseus from Ogygia, who sent Hermes to ask Calypso to release him. She agreed and helped him on his journey back by building him a boat, providing him the necessities like food and wine, and good winds.

One theme that Calypso represents is diversion and distraction. She tried to make Odysseus forget about his wife back home in Ithaca. Calypso tested Odysseus’ perseverance; even with her consistent persuasion and the comfort of the island, he remained loyal and continued to yearn for home. She is a rescuer, saving men from the ocean but when compared to Penelope, she is a temptress. Calypso and her island, Ogygia, also symbolize imprisonment as she trapped Odysseus on the island for seven years.
