What's going on?
It is a rainy day and there are

no customers in what it seems a café. Two black servers are cleaning the café's floor. Because they have the place to themselves, Willie sings and dances as he prepares for an upcoming Ballroom Dancing competition. Willie asks Sam to judge his dancing, and Sam tells Willie to relax. The dance frustrates Willie. Sam tells him he must "glide" in order to feel the music. We can see this in the following, "you made me make mistakes", telling us, the reader, how Willie's character, which in this case, seems to be infuriated.

2. What do I see...? After Sam asks him about Hilda, Willie mentions he has beaten her more than once. We can infer that Hilda suffers from domestic-violence and that Willie is a violent man. Therefore, he needs music to escape his terrible life as a partner.

3. What more can you find? We can interpret that rain foreshadows something dreadful will happen. Also, using rain as a symbol of renewal is perhaps most commonly employed at the end of a long reign of terror. Why are they dancing and practicing for the next competition in the café? Do they work all day? Are they poor so at home they don't have space to practice?

4. Identities & Human ingenuity: The former relates to the way ballroom dancing, as a symbol, has become part of their culture.
Human ingenuity: the role of Arts as a way of escaping a harsh reality; different artistic expressions.
4.1.Questions:
Why is art important to humans? How do artistic expressions work as an escape? What is freedom of artistic expression?
