Indefinite pronouns are pronouns that are used to refer to people or things without mentioning who or what exactly they are. In other words, an indefinite pronoun does not directly refer to any particular person, animal or thing. It is ‘not definite’ and vague. Typical indefinite pronouns are:

Somebody/someone

Something

Some

One

None

Nobody

Many

Few

Everything

Everybody/everyone

Each

Another

Either

Neither

It should be noted that many of these indefinite pronouns may function as other parts of speech such as adjectives.

For example, look at the following sentence:

He drinks one cup of coffee in the morning and another in the afternoon. (‘another’ is a pronoun here.)

I would like another cup of coffee, please. (Here, ‘another’ is an adjective.)

After this lesson you will understand how to order your adjectives in a sentence when describing a noun.

Adjective order in English

In English, the proper order for adjectives is known as the Royal Order of Adjectives. The Royal Order of Adjectives is as follows:

Determiner (This isn’t a type of adjective, however, determiners—including articles, possessives, and demonstratives—are considered in the Royal Order of Adjectives. They must always come before adjectives and the nouns they modify.)

The, your, our, these

Quantity

One, seven, many, few.

Opinion

Delicious, heroic, misunderstood, valuable.

Sometimes, this category is divided into two categories: general and specific opinion, with general opinion coming before specific opinion. For example, you might describe a specific tablet as a popular, perfect choice for digital illustrators. The general opinion here is that it’s popular, an opinion held by many (and easily verified). The more specific opinion is that it’s perfect for digital illustrators—it’s your personal opinion, but it might not be as widely held as the opinion that it’s popular.

Size

Huge, tiny, medium-sized, small.

Age

New, old, decades-old, second-newest

Shape

Square, round, triangular, geometric

Color

Blue, gray, yellow, red

Origin/material

American, wooden, velvet, African

Qualifier

Hound dog, denim skirt, pickup truck, vampire bat

Although you might not have ever seen the proper adjective order listed like this, you may have picked up on it and used it without even realizing what you’re doing. You could naturally follow this order any time you use more than one adjective to describe a noun, no matter where those adjectives fall within the Royal Order.

Read Benjamin Lay the Quaker Comet, Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Changing America and Malala Yousafzai a Normal but Powerful Girl.

Now, write an opinion essay where you compare and contrast the ways in which Malala, and Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for what they believed in and how it was similar and different to that of Benjamin Lay. Benjamin Lay aggressively stood up for what he believed in, even when many people disagreed with his opinions.

Why do you think it is important to stand up for what you believe, even if it means going against the way things are done in one's community? Do you think that Lay made the right choice to disturb the "peace and unity" of the Quaker community by arguing for his beliefs? In your opinion, is it easier to make change by getting along with and inspiring people or by arguing with people?

You can set this essay up as a 5 paragraph essay where you introduce the topic with a "hook" and then connect to your thesis ( the thesis is where you take a stand in your opinion in this case is it important to stand up for what you believe in even when it means going against the way things are done in one's community).

In the 3 body paragraphs you can compare and contrast how Benjamin Lay stood up for his beliefs compared to Malala and Martin Luther King Jr. in the first two paragraphs. In the third body paragraph you can even connect to your own experiences and how they support your opinion. The last paragraph is your conclusion where you restate your thesis in different words and include an end hook.

There are many ways you can write this essay. Take your time, do your best and really think about your beliefs on the topic.

Read Hope I Don't See A Ghost. This is a narrative. Your job is to write either a personal narrative or a made up story. This is where you get to show case your use of vivid verbs and adjectives to really allow the reader to see the setting and characters. Remember to appeal to the senses. If we can imagine what something sounds like, looks like, feels like and tastes like it is more interesting and memorable and allows the reader to become engaged with your story. Have fun. I would recommend you follow the five paragraph format, introducing the characters and setting, and the conflict in the beginning of the story, write the middle with the climax of your story ( the main action) and then the solution or resolution of the problem followed by an ending. Think about what the message ( theme) of your overall story will be. Is it good versus evil? Is it a hero story? A moral tale?

A personal narrative can describe a fear or hardship you overcame or how a relationship with an influential person has shaped your views and changed your life. You can also describe a trip you went on or an event that happened in your life that was important to you.

The narrative graphic organizers and bubble maps will help you organize your thoughts and ideas. Have fun and be creative!

Welcome to Your Summer Grammar and Writing Review Course!

Congratulations on taking the first step to become, not just a good writer but a fantastic one! This course aligns with Common Core ELA Standards for Grade 5

Here is how to get started.

There are 8 Units worth of grammar and writing lessons, worksheets and writing activities. You can scroll up and down the columns to see various lessons and you can scroll across as well.

Start with Unit 1 Grammar and worksheets. Click on a post to access the content. Video lessons are color coded black and corresponding worksheets and activities are labelled with the same lesson number and are color coded red. Ideally you will complete the video lesson, then the worksheet (s) or activity (ies) that go with that lesson. The worksheets are in your black binder. You can print extras from here as needed.

The column next to the unit lessons are writing activities that put what you learned and practiced in the lessons into action. These are color coded blue. Some will ask you to upload a photo to write about. You can respond to these small writing activities by clicking on the plus sign and creating a post. You can then drag this post and place it under the activity or writing assignment.

At the end of each unit is a reflection ( color coded in green) that asks you to think about what you learned in each unit, and answer some questions. You can answer these by creating a post, just like the blue writing practice activities.

Unit 7 contains tutorials that will help you with your essay practice and Unit 8 goes through the entire writing process in detail.

When you finish the Unit lessons (1-8) you can then start to work on the practice essay assignments. Some of the practice essays are connected to one or more reading passages. You must read and take notes on the articles first and then plan your writing. The essays can be read online and there are copies in your black binder. You do not need to complete the comprehension questions that accompany the reading passage unless your mom wants you to.

There are columns where you can free write or journal write with a column color coded in purple that gives you some ideas of what you can write about, but this is a space to practice daily writing so it is really up to you what you would like to write about. Try to use what you have learned so far in your grammar and writing practice to produce your best writing.

I have included many different types of graphic organizers you can use for planning your essays under the Resources column.

To access the google documents for journaling or essay practice simply click on the document and type.

I hope you enjoy practicing your writing and remember not to stress about it. You will be very happy you put in the extra time and effort when you end up being the best writer in 6th grade.

Don't forget about me when you publish your first novel. I'd like an autographed copy please. :)
