         <title>La Riojana Vineyards</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The vineyards were created b immigrants from Italy in the 1940-s, who planted the grapes and formed the cooperative.<br><br>The cooperative creates original Fairtrade wines that are later shipped to Europe and other continents.<br>&nbsp;<br>The people involved with the vineyards are for the most part middle and lower class farmers - the descendants of the original founders of the cooperative. They live in a small village by the vineyards and Fairtrade helps them get more profit and improve the healthcare and quality of life in local communities. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In early 2008, the Dakman Company (a coffee processing company) began to work on improving the quality of coffee from the farmers in this area. The cooperative received Fairtrade Certification in 2009 and currently has 84 members.<br><br>The cooperatives annual production capacity of Robusta green bean is approximately 346 tons but during the 2011/12 harvest productivity increased to 398 tons, 369 of which was sold as Fairtrade.&nbsp;<br><br>CUDLIEMNONG have used Fairtrade Premium funds for various projects:<br><br></div><ul><li>Community development projects (20% of the premium)</li><li>Improvements to infrastructure, including&nbsp; the construction of a coffee storage building and administrative offices (52% of the premium)&nbsp;</li><li>Direct support to members to help them increase productivity and quality (28% of the premium)</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>Founded in 2008, the Neknasi Coffee Growers Cooperative Society has a membership of 422 coffee farmers located in Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea. Neknasi achieved Fairtrade certification in early 2011.</li><li>The organisation produces an average of 120 tonnes of green beans each year. It has built a small storage facility in each village where parchment coffee is stored until it is delivered to the coffee mill contracted by Neknasi where it is processed into green coffee, and then transported on to its exporter, Niugini Coffee, Tea and Spices.&nbsp;</li><li>Social groups: Neknasi communities</li><li><br></li></ol><ul><li>Each of Neknasi’s villages has a piping system which collects and directs river water into the centre of the village</li><li>Neknasi purchased diesel fuel for machinery used during road maintenance to ensure coffee can be transported to the mill on time, making the farmers' lives easier</li><li>Neknasi has a women’s committee, as well as female representatives in the Fairtrade Premium Committee which helps with gender equality. There is also a midwife’s training programme located in one of the villages</li><li>Neknasi distributed vegetable seedling packets to the women of each subgroup, and plans to assist with the sale of the vegetables produced</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>CONACADO is a union of cocoa farmers who sell their product to Fairtrade and some other export markets.<br><br></strong>Dominican Republic is one of the poorest countries in the world, with cocoa being the main income source for people living there. Before Fairtrade was introduced there, farmer families were forced to be underpaid for their work and had terrible living conditions.<br><br>However, everything changed now, with more than a half of the cocoa production being sold to Fairtrade. Repairing schools, introducing pure water, free medical checks and internet — that’s not yet the full list of what Fairtrade has done there.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>The background of the organization</em></strong></div><div>Kaderes Peasants Development Plc (KPD) was formed in January 2008.<br>As a result of political instability in neighbouring Rwanda and Uganda, Karagwe has been receiving immigrants from other ethnic origins like Wakiga, Wanyarwanda and Wahima, those people started harvesting coffee and selling their produce to local traders through middlemen at very low price<br><br><br><strong><em>The product/products</em></strong></div><div>The farmers harvest coffee.<br>They sort and dry it before it is collected by KPD and delivered to the curing mill. Here it is processed into green coffee, bagged and stored ready for export. <br>The coffee is either sold through the Tanzania coffee board auction or direct to buyers. <br><br><br><strong><em>Social groups that are involved</em></strong></div><div>Most members are native Wanyambo people who practice mixed farming.&nbsp;</div><div>They are all subsistence farmers who depend on crops like maize, yams and cassava along with bananas, beans and robusta coffee as cash crops, of which coffee the most important in terms of export earnings.<br><br></div><div><br><strong><em>The ways Fair Trade helps local people:</em></strong></div><ul><li>KPD educates and trains farmers in all matters regarding their rights and obligations in managing their economic and financial activities.</li><li>KDP supports farmers, establishes, and upgrades their organisations.</li><li>KDP strengths and developes the organisation to increase its bargaining power, access commodity market information, access credit and financial services and provide loans to farmers.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The organisation of 14 <em>vanilla</em> producer co-operatives located in Western Uganda.</div><div><br>Despite being suitable for agricultural production, living standards in this region are still very low compared to other parts of the country.&nbsp;<br><br>The main reason of creation, why it was set up in 2005 by 8 co-operatives, was the crash of world market prices for vanilla in 2001. The assosiation was supported by processor and trader Ndali Estates whose aim was to help farmers to improve the quality and quantity of products.<br><br>As it was already mentioned, the main product is vanilla. The members usually produce approximately 66,600kg of vanilla, two-thirds of which are organic certified. Minimum Price of USD 5.10/kg for conventional and USD 5.60/kg for organic vanilla.&nbsp;<br><br>- The organisation usually support educational projects. For example, MMVFA funded the construction of the roof of an examination hall at one of schools.&nbsp;<br>- Moreover, it supports community and infrastructure development projects. Thanks to the Premium, the Karugutu co-operative has set up a dispensary and is planning to build a clinic.&nbsp;<br>- In addition, social and economic transformation of its members is a a huge part investitation as well. The organisation teaches the farmers with modern agricultural skills and knowledge in optimal land utilisation. Besides, members are&nbsp; trained in administration, IT, and marketing skills.<br><br></div>]]></description>
