Erin McKean describes how words are formed in languages -- specifically English -- and why making new words is beneficial. The opening of the TED Talk reminds me a lot of the novel Frindle, in which a fifth grader invents the titular word as a synonym to pen as a means of messing with his teacher. They share a lot of the same ideas. Words only mean what they mean because we say they do.

An interesting lesson in history to be sure. I'd highly recommend it to all Americans, seeing as its mostly about us and politics. The lesson goes on to say that in many cases words are used to describe things in a certain way, but the word itself changes based on what it's describing. A good example would be the word Nimrod. Nimrod originally referred to a great biblical hunter but is now synonymous with words like "idiot." The reason for this is that Bugs Bunny calls Elmer Fudd a Nimrod on occasion sarcastically, and the use of the word changed to match Fudd's modest intelligence.

The video showed how culture determines the words and while we may think dictionaries are the holy grail of language but in truth they outdate and eventually become nearly useless because language changes with the cultural change. It showed how you can never say a word is not real because it is slang because slang becomes "real" words. I liked this video because it was different view and you questioning things you had not thought of before.

The house of Representatives did not believe someone with such significance should hold the title "president" yet over time, it was the reality of his power that changed the word into something much greater then it was to begin with. At the end of the video he says, "reality changes words, far more than words could ever change reality"
- I enjoyed the video, it made me realize the power a certain status can have and how things can change over time.

1. Culture shapes society by using words. We decide what a word is and isn't. We are told not to use certain words, but yet we are told to be creative and have an open mind. Creating new words is being creative. Yet in society, we are not supposed to create new words, we are not supposed to use slang, they want us to use proper English, yet words have been evolving over time. It is simply creative ways to communicate with one another.
2. I liked this video too, I liked how it shows how society is so against new words, yet they expect kids to be creative.
