Chroam Key is basically all round Green Screen. In this video by Katy Perry there is objects in the foreground but all the background is Green Screen CGI. This makes the scene look bigger and grand when actually they are filming in a studio. This can be linked to special effects.

I would use this depending on the genre my group picks. I would like to use it on the basis that it looks clear and professional.

Camera Angles like Movement are very important to any video production. Through angles you can make the audience see only what you want them to see. Some angles can also make the audience see people on screen in a certain way for example: a camera angle looking up at someone makes them look powerful while an angle looking down makes them look weak. In this video there are many different camera angles from Long Shots to P.O.V.

I would like to use a variety of different shots to help add to the feel of the scenes, in particular angles that are clever or difficult to produce.

Camera movement is very important in any type of video recording. Camera movements make the video more interesting and can show the audience a different perspective of a scene or shot. In Uptown Funk almost every type of camera movement is used. Dolling, Tracking and Spinning are all used in the video. Two shots in particular are the tracking of the limo in the street and the camera spinning at the climax of the song. Both of these camera movements add to the feel of the shot and help keep the audiences attention.

I would like to use both of these camera movements in my music video for several reasons. Firstly, it makes the shot look visually interesting and will intrigue the audience. Second, I have never properly attempted either of these shots before and would like the challenge and to see how they would turn out. I would also like to show how even with no Dolly or Crane we could still create these camera movements with simple tools and ideas

Multi-image is a technique where one or two people are copied and multiplied on screen to give the effect of several of the same person at once. In this video there is a variety of different multi-images used. This can emphasise actions, certain lyrics or just be used for effect.

If I were to use multi-image in my video I would use it to emphasis a certain point or for effect in a certain shot to represent for example madness.

Miming lip syncing is where the Artist sings the song in the video miming all the way through with no stops, the audio is cut and the studio track put over the top. Then when the audience watches the music video the Artists lips are In sync with the high quality audio and it looks as if it is continuous singing. However, it has to be timed exactly other wise they will have to redo the whole shot. In the video Duffy Mimes for almost the entire lenght of the song no stop until about 3.25 near the end of the video.

This type of lip sync can be difficult as you will need a very good actor or actress that will be able to time the miming perfectly. If I were to use this in my video I would only use it for about 20 seconds in a tracking shot.

Playback lip sync is where the artist lip syncs but non continuously. This tends to be easier than miming as you can cut and can do it line by line. This can sometimes mean that on low budget videos the singing doesn't look quite real. In this music video it crosses between several different scenes with less than half containing lip sync.

This style of lip sync would be better suited to the style of music video I would like to produce. It is easier to film and if done correctly can look great.

Effects are anything from animation to graphics and special effects. In this video we can see that it is mostly computer generated effects. There is also some green screen mixed in with a few stage props, eg. Guitar and bench in still bellow.

Depending on the genre of song we use I wouldn't mind trying some of the effects and seeing what they look like. Whatever genre my group decides I would like to have at least one effect in the video. Maybe to open or end the music video.

Cutting to the beat is where the editor cuts the video to the beat of the song or track. In this example we can clearly see how the editor cuts on the beat. By cutting to the beat it helps the video flow and look professional.

I would definitely like to use this to use this in my music video as it will look more professional and syncs in with the song, making it flow.

This is where one artist directly references another. In this music video by the Pasadenas they reference several famous artists like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix, the Jackson 5 and Elvis.

The main shots used are long shots, medium shots and closeups. Long shots are used when the group are dancing, medium shots for when they aren't dancing or singing and closeups of the band member on lead vocals at the time he is singing. There is a lot of camera movement in the video most of which are Dolly shots similar to tracking. The camera is on a Dolly which is on a track. This video makes it look as if they are performing on a stage and this is added to by the camera looking as if from an audiences point of view and moving from on side of the stage to the other.

Mise-en-scene doesn't really apply to this style of performance video but the crate background could have been put there to make the video look retro. The retro microphones also add to the retro feel of the set/stage.

There are two main editing techniques presented in this music video. Cutting to the beat is seen throughout the video and about half way through the video there is cross cutting between the present scene and a blue tinted flashback type scene.

They use stage lighting throughout the music video which have a slight blue tint or they could be xenon lights.

There was also no sound used apart from the track which was very upbeat and timed perfectly with the groups dancing.

The only props used in the video are the retro microphones that add to the atmosphere and make it look like it is a stage performance. The groups costumes/clothes are smart shoes and trousers with black T-Shirts and Leather Jackets. This could be seen as copying the style of Elvis who was seen wearing leather regularly. Their hair styles also fit Elvis's style.

There are no real bright colours apart from the red jackets worn by two members of the group in the flashback like cuts. This does make it a little boring but adds to the 1960's feel of the video along with the footage.

This is where a music video refers to or depicts a person, place, event, book or art work. In this video it refers to school teachers and school kids. The video makes teachers look like wardens in a prison and the school kids like the prisoners being forced to work.

This music video contains lot of different shots each serving a different purpose. Most shots are also fixed but shudder a little in the uprising scene to help add to the chaotic atmosphere. There is one very long panning shot which is used to show a sort of cloning process in the video but this is the only real camera movement in the video.

There is a lot of mise-en-scene in the video. At the beginning all the teachers are old and wearing typical boarding school teachers attire. This makes them look scary and dull. Near the middle of the video everything is dark and the only other colours are from the dull school uniform costumes. There is also a little mist in the air to make it look more Eire.

The editing is again rather simple except from a seamless edit at around 5 minutes in going from the uprising to the building on fire. The editing is at some point cutting to the beat but this isn't consistent.

Most of the lighting used in Floyds video is artificial and come from spot lights which make a big impression on the set. This helps add to the industrial feel of the scene. Natural light is also used but only in the classroom scene and a handful of other shots. At the end of the video orange tint lights are used to help light up the shots with the fires in them.

There is a lot of extra sound in this video separate and joined to the track. Some of these sounds include; the crackling of fire, smashing of desks and bricks and verbal conversation at the start. These all help add to the story and atmosphere of the video.

The only real prop used in the film is the cane the Head Teacher holds. This shows he is in a position of power and therefore a powerful man. All the school children have dark coloured uniforms to match the colour the rest of the colours in the video and the Teachers costumes are all wearing typical teacher clothing with the Head dressed in a black Mortar Board hat and gown.

The colours in the video are all dark and faded, this matches the style of the music which is rock and adds to the prison type atmosphere.

This is where the music video can work on or add a different light onto the song's meaning or message. It makes the audience think about the meaning behind it or can change there view of the song.

In this music video a boy is running but the audience or viewer don't know what from or where he is going, this makes it open to interpretation into the meaning behind the song/video.

A variety of shots where used in this video from Extreme Long Shots to Closeups. The Extreme Long Shots are used to show the size and scale which makes the young boy running look small and innocent. The closeups show the audience the worried look on the boys face. The video consist of a mixture of panning and tracking camera movements along with a few fixed shots. These shots tend to keep the boy in the center of the screen or with a fixed shot show him running across the screen showing he is moving forward or making progress.

There is not much mise-en-scene in this video as the background is relatively plain and computer generated bushes and rocks added in, the foreground just has the odd rock or bush in it representing a baron wasteland.

The editing cuts to the beat and the editing is in pace with the song, faster at the climax, slower at the breaks. There are no fades or transitions meaning it is just made up of simple cuts.

The video is filmed in black and white so there is not much light. However, the journey or shots where the boy is running seem to be dark while the destination seems to be bright or light up, maybe resembling safety or salvation.

Again in this video there is no sound apart from the song, still the beat and drums in the music are like war drums. This could be linked to why he is running away and how he looks at the end of the video with sword, shield and helmet, ready for war.

Three props are used in the video; viking helmet, sword and a shield. These can be seen as protection or for attacking or both as he is first running in terror but and given the Armour for what looks like protection then the mood of the scene changes and it seems as if he is almost running to attack. Costumes in the video are look good. The creatures that are following the boy are all different and unique. This makes them look more believable. The boy is wearing a school uniform. This could give some clue as to where and why he is running away and makes him look even more innocent.

The music video is all in monochrome and therefore there is no colour, this could be done to make the video look more serious and grim.

Lyric Interpretation is what the audience or viewer think the message behind the song is and how the music video can help show this message. Lyric interpretation is important for artist as it is the message or idea that they want to convey to the audience. It also gives the artist his style which sets him apart from other artists.

In the video Paolo Nutini is almost acting out to the lyrics. E.g. when the lyrics say "I got out of bed one Tuesday, tired and feeling quite sick", Paolo gets out of the bed looking ill and so on and so on. He basically carries out what the lyrics are saying throughout the video until the end.

The shots in this video tend to be medium shots or closeups. This is to make the artist the subject in the video and keep the audience fixed on him and his actions. It also makes his lip syncing look more real. Most shots in the video were fixed but there was a some camera movement in the form of tracking as Paolo was walking down the road.

The mise-en-scene is the video with his clothes scattered across his room and non of the furniture matching makes his room look messy. This shows he is unorganized and doesn't really care about what his look, so when he puts on his new shoes it makes him feel better and the mis-en-scene is better.

The editing follows the speed of the music as st the start of the song it is slow along with the editing while later on as the song begins to pick up rhythm the speed of the editing increases slightly.

The only real use of lighting in this video is used to make the indoors shots look bright as it is a party. All the other light seen in the video is natural light as the other shots are in a street.Artificial light is used in the shot where Paolo is walking down the street at night. This is to make him stand out and help the audience see his expressions and lipsync.

There is no other sound in the video apart from the track itself.

There wasn't any props in the music video apart excluding the mis-en-scene, however, Paolo goes through several costumes through the video. Apart from the opening costume which is a leopard skin dressing gown, all the other costumes are just ordinary clothes.

The colours in the video are mostly bright and colourful especially in the party shots to add to the feel and vibrance of the scene.

This is where the music video can influence a certain style, way of life or use of a product. It can also be linked to advertising.

In this video by Avicii both advertising and a way of life are seen. In the video there are a lot of shots of the new Volvo as the song is also used in the new Volvo TV advert. It also shows a different way of living which is traveling around the world.

This is where the artist uses and acknowledges something in his or her video.

This song by Chris Cornell was used for Casino royale in 2006 and therefore Cornell was able to use some of the footage in his music video along with some of his own. This means he is using and acknowledging the film and it is good publicity as people who watch the film will check out the music video and people who see the music video will check out the film. Also by using some of the films footage it makes Cornell's video more exciting and he doesn't have to do as much filming.

This style of music video contains references to something like a film or a book.

This video is influenced by the new film in the Fast and Furious Franchise as it is the theme song of the film shown at the start and the credits. In the video there are shots from the films and in particular Paul Walker as he passed away half way through filming, this also relates to the song as it is called See You Again.

A parody is where the artist takes an existing song/video and changes it to make it their own, by adding humour and changing the style or lyrics of the song. This type of music video tends to be made by fans and the originals tend to be famous songs.

This parody was made using a game called Mine Craft with special effects and animation. It is an exact copy of the original but is made comical through the different lyrics relating to the game it was by using.

David Hasselhoff - True Survivor

A Pastiche music video is basically one artist copying the style of a film or other artist. It is between Parody and Homage music videos. It is a copy or imitation of a previous video or film neither being humorous or paying homage and usually produced with respect.

This music video comes from the film Kung Fury released in May this year and follows similar styles from the film. The music video has taken several aspects from the film and added it into the music video. It also has the same feel of the film with mostly black and red colours and violence.

Surrealist music videos are videos that are unbelievable or almost fiction. Usually these are animated or have advanced special effects.

In the video kidz Take That arrive on earth in a massive space ship and perform their song to the crowds of people. All dressed from different time periods they look like they are also time travelers. This makes the video surrealist, especially with the CGI spaceship.

This type of music video is used to make the audience feel for something. It does this through using almost random shots of different things to convey or relate to one idea. These shots usually link to the lyrics.

This music video reflects the lyrics of the song well as the song is about time and the sand in an hour glass. In the video the hourglass is shown through pouring sand and time is shown through clockwork type imagery. The images arent linked but the viewer can see the overall picture of time running out.

This type of video is where it is animated or contains stop motion animation. This could be partialy or all animated.

This video is completely computer animated. It's simple retro computer game animation makes the video seem almost childlike and would appeal to people who grew up with this animation. The style also suits the music as it is happy and upbeat.

This style of music video usually comes in the form of a short story. The meaning behind the story usually relates to the song and lyrics or to a topic they feel strongly about and want to project to there audience or fans.

The story in Hozier's video is follows a gay couple who are hated because they are different to the extent that they are beaten up because of it.. This is a strong and rather dark message for a music video, however it created lots of controversy and became a massive success.

This style of video Contains live footage from a stage performance, usually from a concert. Most of AC/DC's music videos follow this style and contain live footage.

Through using this style of video the audience can almost get a feel for what it would be like to be there live. It also makes them feel as if they are watching a performance instead of a video.

This style of music video is where the video can be interpreted in different ways as it doesn't have a set meaning or story and is open to the audience to interpret/find a meaning.

In this video by Bastille a cop is having mental trouble dealing with the amount of death he has seen. In the video the dead people sing. This is very strange and the reason behind it is unknown leaving it to interpretation.

Robbie Williams began his career as a member of the boy Band Take That which produced several No.1 hits. He left the band in 1995 to start a solo career. He is now the best selling British solo artist and his hits include; Angels, She's The One and Supreme.

Robbie's image is like no other. His image is courageous and reckless. I most of his music videos he tends to be the center of attention or playing the lead role. He comes across as a very outgoing person and good with the opposite sex.

His music tends to be pop and soft rock and his songs tend to be about love. This song is more aggressive and leaning towards rock with its lyrics heavy drums and electric guitar.

Robbie sticks to fashion trends and dresses modern while keeping smart. He does anyhow like Tattoos and has a number all over his body.

The footage quality and sound in this video is near perfect. The image quality is so good that some Television and computer screens don't have enough pixels to display the image in its most detailed form. In comparison to the previous video which looked slightly dated this looks more modern and has a crisper image.

In the 1990's video cameras became smaller and more technologically advanced. This makes them more maneuverable when filming and means you can produce almost any shot type. The video contains lots of closeups of Robbie singing and long shots of him and actresses dancing. The video also contains some extreme closeups and cutaways.

There are lots of different editing techniques in this video. One is crosscutting between two different scenes which helped create a small story. This is rare in music videos. The editor also used editing pace and made the editing quicker as the climax to the video/song nearer.

Special Effects, both physical and digital, were used throughout the video. The smoke machines,sparklers and light beams added to the performance look of the video and make it more interesting and exciting. There was also a blurred motion effect in the video used to add to the madness of the scene.

The style of the video was made to look dark and almost creepy with the face paint and the monochrome effect. This is the complete opposite style that Robbie usually uses in his videos. However, this makes it stand out. The style of the video does in keep with his image as being the reckless, outgoing man he is.

Comparison to previous decade

The 1990's saw a rise in music videos with the popularity of VEVO, MTV and Youtube. In some ways Robbie and Queen are alike as they both dress up and are courageous. However, their music videos are very different. The quality of the footage hasn't changed much since the 1980's but Robbie's video is better put together than Queen's and looks more enhanced. There are also a larger variety of shots in Robbie's in comparison to Queen's simpler video. Editing is much more advanced in this video compared to Queen's. This is because in the last decade editing digitally has been made much easy and can be done quicker. In comparison to the previous video, this one has more special effects like blurring and light beams. The only reason for this is because in the 1980's these special effects hadn't been invented.

Queen is an English band that formed in 1970 with Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor. The band have sold between 150 - 300 million records worldwide and are now one of the worlds best selling music artists.

Each member of Queen had their own unique image. Freddie always wore something special and tended to be the leading figure in the band. Brian was the lead Guitarist and remembered for his big bushy hair. John was the youngest and therefore always picked up a female audience. Roger was the bands drummer and often under looked as he wrote several of Queens big hits. Overall, Queen appealed to a wide audience and there music was loved world wide.

The music Queen played was a mix of Pop and Rock. They stated out play hard rock and heavy metal but over time altered there music to pop and rock so they would appeal to a larger audience. This song is about breaking free of the daily routine.

Since Queen were such a popular band they were very infomercial. This meant that what ever they wore was cool and instantly seen as fashionable. Mostly they wore V-Necks, Tank Tops and Leather Jackets which were fashion trends at the time.

In the 1980's all footage was filmed in colour and had clearer audio this means the quality of the footage dramatically improved. This video which was filmed in 1984 but could pass as a video shot from a phone today and the only thing that would give it away is how old the sets look. The music video ad to be good as music videos were now being shown on MTV to the masses.

With the advance in video cameras there are lots of different shots that are now possible to carryout. In the video we see; JIb (crane), tilt, pan and zoom shots. This also makes the video look more modern and makes it more interesting for the audience.

In the 1980's with the birth of digital cameras and recording, editing became a big part in the filming process. In this video we can see that shot transitions and continuity editing techniques are now possible and used easily.

In this video we can see both physical and digital special effects. Physical special effects include; Smoke Machines, sparks and Explosions. They also added a digital special effect. This is a shot transition that looks like a rip across the screen. This type of effect could only have been done through a digital process and was probably something the audience hadn't seen before.

Queen had a unique style making everything big and bold and sometimes wakey. George Starostin an online reviewer said they have "that POMP element". The band emphasized everything and this can even be seen in the video through there comedic exaggeration of a typical English home.

Comparison to previous decade

In the 1980's digital recording and editing became possible and film became a thing of the past. With the advances in technology Queen were able to make a good quality music video and add some digital special effects that were impossible for the Bee Gees. Music videos in the 80's also focused more on acting and physical performance than performing a song in front of the camera. Queen also used a digital special effect in their video and made it a significant part of the video.

Stayin' Alive was first released on 13th December 1977 and became famous after it was used in the film Saturday Night Fever. It is ranked 191 in 'The 500 greatest songs of all time'.

The Bee Gees are actually three brothers; Barry Gibb (lead singer), Robin Gibb (Keyboard & Piano) and Maurice Gibb (Guitar). The Bee Gees have sold 220 million records and are considered to be one of the worlds best selling music artists ever. They also wrote all their own songs and even wrote successful songs for other artists. This made the Bee Gees very influential and the artists image and music reflected the times. The Bee Gees image was peaceful and relaxed.

Stayin' Alive is one of the most famous Disco/Club/Dance songs of all time and is still played in Discos and Clubs today. It is Pop, soul & Disco music and has a good beat for dancing to.

The Bee Gees where one of the most popular artists at the time and kept up with all the fashion trends. They all wore typical clothes of the time including; big collar shirts, flared trousers and necklaces. They also all had long hair which was a big fashion trend at the time.

The quality of the footage in the music video was state of the art at the time. They would have probably used a KCK camera from the company that is now known as Bosch. The video has stood the test of time as it is still being played on screens in nightclubs. The colour in the footage is quite dark but colour TV was still taking off in the 60's & 70's.

This Video uses a variety of different shots. The main three shots they use are Medium Shots, Closeups and Medium Long Shots. They used closeups during the chorus and long shots for the Verses. They also traced the group as they were walking along to the beat.

The Editing techniques used in the video are very simple. This is because in the 70's they used film and therefore were restricted by technology at the time. A simple cut or fade was the best thing they could do at that time. They did however, cut to the beat which helped the music video flow.

The only special effect used in the video is at the start where writing comes up saying 'Star Stream Special Guest Star' and 'Bee Gees Stayin Alive'.

The Bee Gees had a particular style which is instantly recognizable. This included their bright clothing, meaningful lyrics and trademark falsetto singing in all their music.

Comparison to previous decade

The Bee Gees and the Rolling Stones are two very different groups that sing completely different music genres. Therefore their music videos are bound to be very different.

The first difference is the music, the Bee Gees wrote music to be dance and party to while the Rolling Stones wrote their music to sort of reflect what was going on at the time. This meant the the Bee Gees video is seen as a more happy and lively than the Rolling Stones. Fashion had also changed, where the Rolling Stones dressed quite casually the Bee Gees were more showman ship in their attire.

The biggest difference between the two music videos is the footage itself with the Rolling Stones video being shot on a set in Black and White, while the Bee Gees video was shot on an outdoor location in colour. The Bee Gees video is also clearer and less static than the Rolling Stones.

The Rolling Stones are considered to be 'The Worlds Greatest Rock & Roll Band' and have sold more than 200 Million records. They are an English Rock & Roll band that started in 1962. From 1962 - 1967 they came to the height of their fame.

The Bands main image consisted of two things youth and Rebellion. The rolling Stones appealed mainly to a teen/young adult audience as they were always a little rebellious. Even this song can be interpreted as rebellious through its lyrics and music.

The music itself is rock and blues popular with younger generations. This style of music also has more of a beat and sounds more modern. The lyrics and track are also easy to remember which means you can easily sing along to it.

In the 1960's the fashion trends were turtle neck jumpers, shirt & Ties and long or bowl cut hair. The rolling stones all had long hair and often wore colourful shirts to gigs and performances.

The quality of the footage in this video is by modern standards not very clear (grainy) and obviously it is in black and white as colour TV wasn't invented until the late 1960's. As the footage wasn't in colour and not very clear they relied on the bands performance.

For almost half the video the same shot is used of Mick Jagger. This shot concentrates on his face and zooms in from a different angles. The most common shot type used is closeups, these are used on each member of the band at some time during the video.

In this video only one Editing Technique was used. By today's standards a cut is the easiest edit to do and can be done in seconds. However, then a cut was pretty much the only edit they could do.

Special Effects were literally unheard of in the 1960's but there were physical special effects on set like the background which looks wavy. The set also adds to the feel of the video.

The Rolling Stones have always had a rebellious style which makes them appeal to teenagers all over the world. They are what you would call a typical boy Band.

Comparison to previous decade

Both the Rolling Stones and Sinatra's videos are Monochrome, relatively the same quality and filmed like a stage performance but do have a few differences. Firstly Sinatra is the only subject in the entire video and this can be boring while the Rolling Stones mixed it up a bit with a shot of a different band member every now and then instead of focusing just on Jagger.

Secondly, the Rolling Stones are dressed very casually in their video in comparison to Sinatra dressed in a suit. This could be because of the age difference between the performers and the audience.

The Rolling Stones also had a more exciting set or background with the band playing on plinths compared to Sinatra's plain walls and wooden dividers.

Frank Sinatra first performed properly in 1935 and his career lasted until he became ill in 1996. Some of his most famous songs include; New York New York, My Way and Come Fly With Me. Sinatra has only been matched in popularity by Elvis, The Beatles and Michael Jackson.

Sinatra had a smart and slick image and is famous for wearing a black suit or tuxedo. He always looked smart and upper-class and all his actions on stage were smooth. This made him very appealing to teen girls and young women at the time and this bought him an all new audience.

Sinatra sung mostly Jazz and Swing which added to his smooth personality. His music is used regularly in films and often relates to the night bar scene. This is because he performed in front of audiences at high end bars in New York.

In the 1950's there was a set fashion trend, especially for the american man. Typically they wore a suit, carried a briefcase and wore a Ferado Hat. Sinatra is typically seen wearing a Ferado with either a black or navy blue tux. This made him popular with working men as they could relate to him.

The quality of the footage in this video was at the time average quality as colour cameras wouldn't begin to take of in america until the 1960's. The video would have been broadcast on American television in the evenings. A camera they could have used was a Dumont Marconi MK IV. This was a large stationary film camera used during this time period.

Due to the camera of the time and the fact that maneuverability was difficult, only certain types of shots were possible. The camera would be centered to the stage and Pan the stage following the the subject, in this case the artist. The main shot was a medium shot of Sinatra with the camera later zooming in to his face for a closeup.

Apart from 3 - 4 cuts evenly spread throughout the video there are no Editing Techniques used. This is because in the 1950's Television was seen as a relatively new thing and still being developed.

In the 1950's Special Effects were nonexistent. However, to the 50's audience this video as good as they could get and didn't need any special effects anyway. The audience of that time also didn't expect to see any special effects.

Frank Sinatra's' style was calm and relaxed but he was also slightly cheeky as a result of his upbringing. He was always seen wearing expensive clothes in particular suits and performed at a lot of high profile events, the genre of music he performed also suited these events. This is shown strongly in the video.

The purpose of this music video is to help promote the latest Bond Movie and also to promote Adele as an artist.

Was the extension of income for a film or for the artist or group?

The song was written and performed for the latest James Bond film called Skyfall giving the song the name. The music video sticks to the same elements that are in the film and added to the films promotion at the time. The video even opens with the famous gun barrel opening from the Bond Franchise. By helping advertise Skyfall she also gets more publicity as James Bond is the biggest franchise in the world and therefore the song will obtain a much larger audience.
