Nelson disagreed with the African government which was controlled by a white group at the time, they had laws separating the white and black races. The white and black people weren’t allowed to do anything together and had to basically live separate lives under a system called apartheid. Both races were completely separated up to the point were it became illegal for black people to use the same things and go to the same places as white people. Although they were a minority, white people were considered better and had access to better schools and hospitals. Black people also had no basic rights such as being allowed to vote in elections. (Keller, 2020) Because these laws were different from everything Nelson stood for, he was willing to do whatever it took to change the government. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) movement in 1942 and later co-founded the ANC youth league which protested against apartheid. Nelson spent 20, hard working years directing a campaign which lead peaceful, non-violence defiance against the south African government and its racist policies. Unfortunately in 1962, Nelson was arrested and jailed for 27 years in Robben Island. Until he got out and continued to fight for what he believed in. During there marriage there were complications such as when Nelson went to jail. Whilst in jail, he was only allowed to see his wife every six months.
