By the command of the sultan, he sent his troops to defend the shores. The soldiers put up a fight, but to no avail, for their rackety spear were no match for the garfish’s razor snout. 

 

The soldiers were doomed to lose this fight. He quickly decided to tell his soldiers to retreat while he finds a solution to this turmoil.

 

It was then when a young boy, Nadim decides to step up and suggest planting banana tree stalks to defend the shores of Temasek. The sultan, desperate for any solutions, decides to take up the idea.

 

As the next wave of garfishes came, this time, no one was getting hurt. The stalks made an impenetrable defense as the garfishes’ snouts were impaled into the trees and thus rendering the fishes immobile. The soldiers cleaned up the shores, resulting in a victory.

 

The people celebrated the victory, congratulating Nadim for his quickwit. All except the sultan and his advisors. Filled with jealousy and fear of losing his powerful position, the advisors hatched a plan.

 

Nadim was killed in cold blood, his blood staining the hills of Temasek. A shade of blood so intense and aplenty that the hill which Nadim resides on was stained in maroon. This is why the hill was thus called bukit timah, meaning red hill.
