         <description><![CDATA[<div><br><a href="http://slideplayer.com/5906160/19/images/5/Absolute+vs.+Relative+location.jpg">Australia is the only country in the world that is also a continent.&nbsp;<br><br>Australia also has a very&nbsp; diverse collection of flora and fauna.<br><br>About 200 million years ago, all the land was joined in one super -continent Over time, this huge landmass broke apart into a number of tectonic plates. Eventually, they formed the continents we know today.<br><br>The continental drift theory is based on the ideas of Alfred Wegener.<br><br>About 80 percent of the continent's plants and animals are found nowhere else on Earth.          <title>3. A Land Far From Great Britain: </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="http://slideplayer.com/5906160/19/images/5/Absolute+vs.+Relative+location.jpg"><br>Australia was first discovered in 1770 by James Cook when he was exploring the South Pacific.<br><br>Due to having problems with the loss of American colonies, the government built a prison in the farthest place possible. That area was Australia.<br><br>In 1788, eleven ships from Britain arrived in Australia. Those ships had around 700 convicts in them. Eventually, more than 160,000 convicts had been sent to Australia. <br><br>However, a<strong>s more settlers came, Aborigines (Australia's first people) were often pushed off their land.<br><br>Eventually, Australia gained its independence in 1901.</strong> Its new flag has a small copy of the British “Union Jack” in one corner. The purpose of the policy was to keep people of color from entering the country.<br><br>They would have to listen to a </strong> 50-word statement in a European language, then they'd have to write it down word for word. Those who couldn't do it, were not aloud to enter. <strong>The “white Australia” policy ended in the 1970s. </strong>By 2008, more than 21 million people lived in Australia.<br><br>Australia lets in around 200,000 immigrants each year now. About half of them came from Asia. People immigrate to Australia for many reasons. Some include,<strong>refugees</strong> fleeing wars.looking for an education opportunity, or trying to get a good job.<br></a><br></div>]]></description>

Its seasons are the opposite of the seasons occurring in the northern half of the world. Summer there starts in December and runs through March. December in the United States is usually cold, snowy winter where we have to bundle up and stay warm. But for Australia, they don't have to try to be warm, they ARE warm. The </strong>black swan, saltwater crocodiles, and duck-billed platypus are a few examples.<br><br>There are more than 13 million living species of plants and animals. About one million are found in Australia. Many of these are found nowhere else on Earth. <br><br>Since Australia was once separated from the other continents, it's plants and animals were all of their own. Many <strong>plants and animals adapted to a wide variety of climates within Australia. <br><br>Early settlers from Europe brought many plants and animals with them. One was the rabbit.</strong> The rabbits had easily adapted to Australia and is actually the main reason a native species, the bilby, are in danger of extinction.          <title>7. Living Under an Ozone Hole</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="http://slideplayer.com/5906160/19/images/5/Absolute+vs.+Relative+location.jpg"><br><strong>Scientists divide Earth's atmosphere into different layers.</strong>&nbsp;The lowest layer contains the air we breathe.&nbsp;<strong>The next layer begins about six miles above Earth. It contains a gas called&nbsp;</strong><strong><em>ozone</em></strong><strong>.<br><br>Scientists discovered that the ozone over Antarctica was thinning in 1985. They referred this thin patch as the ozone hole.<br><br>The thinning of the ozone layer has created health problems for Australians. The rates of Australians receiving skin cancer have increased drastically.&nbsp;</strong>Two out of three Australians are now likely to develop skin cancer in their lifetime.<br><br>Posters and advertisements advise Australians to “slip, slop, slap” before they go out in the sun. This means to “slip” on a shirt, “slop” on some sunscreen, and “slap” on a hat to protect their skin.<br><br></a><br></div>]]></description>
