I- Freedom of speech

The first amendment protects the civil liberty of free speech, press, and religion. This is pretty self explanatory in the real world application. Elonis vs. US establishes the boundaries for social media and free speech.

II- Right to bear arms

This amendment protects the right to own firearms. In real life this can protect your life and property against people who want to take it from you. District of Columbia v. Heller ruled that the 2nd amendment defends the right to self defense with a firearm.

III- Quartering of soldiers

This amendment protects the right to having property and doing what you want with it. In a real world application this would look like refusing to allow soldiers to stay in your home, eat your food, etc. Engblom v Carey is one of the first court cases to interpret this amendment.

IV- Search and arrest

This amendment ties back to the civil liberty of due process. An example of this would be refraining from being searched out of the blue by police. Brendlin v. California elaborated on the 4th amendment due to a search during a traffic stop.

V-Rights in criminal cases

This amendment ties back to the civil liberty of due process. This looks like people being able to stay silent or withhold information from police officers. Miranda v. Arizona ruled that the 5th amendment applies when a person is taken into custody for questioning.

VI-Right to a fair trial

This amendment protects the civil liberty of due process. This applies in real life by being able to have a fair trial. Gideon v. Wainwright established the right to an attorney which can be tied back to the 6th amendment.

VII-Rights in civil cases

The 7th amendment protects due process in that people are given the right to a fair civil case. This would be applied in real life by the judge not taking sides in a civil case and ruling a fair ruling based on the conflict and who is liable. In Curtis v. Loether , the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the Seventh Amendment gives parties the right to a jury trial in all civil cases.

VIII- Bails, fines, punishment

This amendment protects the civil liberty of due process. An example of this would be having a fair prosecution and punishment for the crimes that you commit/ the civil disagreements that you engage in. In Wilson v. Seiter, the 8th amendment was interpreted and it was ruled that for it to apply, the defendant being wrongfully treated in a prison must be of a culpable state of mind.

IX- Rights retained by the people, implied powers

This amendment protects the civil liberties of voting and reproductive rights. In real life, this looks like people voting for the president/ other politicians as well as having the right to an abortion. Roe v. Wade is an important court case that established reproductive rights for women.

X- States Rights and Federal rights

The 10th amendment protects the rights of state governments against federal governments. This would be applied in real life to establish what state and federal governments have the power to do. In Printz v. US, The federal government violated the Tenth Amendment when Congress required state and local officials to perform background checks on people buying guns.
