The Sino - Japanese war was a conflict that took place in 1937 - 1941 between Japan and China. It was the second Sino - Japanese war to occur the first occurring in 1894. It broke out when China began resisting Japanese expansion. Prior to the war in the pacific Japan began their territorial expansion throughout Asia and the Sino Japanese war was essentially Chinas resistance against Japanese expansion. Key features of the event include the collapse of Chinas forces under the pressure of Japans invasion, Japan having already captured Manchuria. Key leaders involved were Chiang Kai-shek The Republic of Chinas President, Japans Prime Minister Itō Hirobumi and Japans ambassador Hiroshi Saito. The impact of the war was the death of around 14 million Chinese (Gordon. G Chang for the New York Times) and around 80 million were made refugees. The conflict destroyed much of Chinas cities, much of the countryside and greatly damaged the economy and ultimately resulted in a win for the Japanese.

Japanese Invasion of Manchuria (1931)

In the midst of 1931, Japan had invaded Manchuria without proper declarations of war, whilst also breaching the rules of the League of Nations. Although Japan obtained a highly developed industry, their land was limited in natural resources. In order to fill this gap in resources, Japan resorted to Manchuria for oil, rubber and lumber. Additionally, as Japan had hardly felt the repercussions of World War I, the nation became increasingly crowded due to its restricted size and escalating population. Manchuria on the other hand provided nearly 200,000 square kilometres, which would easily solve the nation's population crisis. The Great Depression of 1929 had also left Japan with an increase of foreign tariffs on its exports of manufactured goods. Overall, with all the problems that Japan was suffering, Manchuria seemed to hold a attractive solution to them. China's initial response to the threat of invasion was to seek help from the League of Nations in aiding to drive them out of China. However, after seeing the benefits that Manchuria would present Japan with, they nation refused to withdraw from Manchuria, using the mid warning as an excuse to leave the League of Nations. The League then resorted to the implementation of economic sanctions. Yet, as a result of the Great Depression it meant that the nations that wanted to trade with Japan did not want to risking losing this trade. Consequently, the League could not enforce its authority and eventually Japan was to unite with Germany and Italy.

The leading countries were The United States, on behalf of the Western nations and the Soviet Union, on behalf of Eastern Europe.
"Mr. Gorbachov Tear Down this Wall" - Reagan

This is the famous line of a speech from President Ronald Reagan. He gave this at Berlin in front of the Berlin Wall. In this speech Reagan challenges Gorbachov to act and to try and make peace. He then explains that the USA is ready to have discussions and for the end of the cold war. This is important because Gorbachov takes this challenge and starts the discussions to end the war. This challenge from Reagan effective saw to the end of the cold war and to the control of the weapons of mass destruction that both sides had. This challenge came at an important time because the Soviets had recently removed some of their missiles that threatened some of America's closest allies. This challenge was still risky because the Soviets might have taken it as an insult and started a nuclear war.
