John Locke believed that children were a blank slate. What he meant by a blank slate, was that children have room to learn and be educated. He believed that education is more scientific than religious. That we shouldn't bring religion into education.

In the 1600s children were viewed as small adults. In the lower classes, children were working with their fathers to bring in more money for the family.

Freidrich Froebel, was the father of "kindergarten". He believed that children needed a play-based environment so the classroom was in a garden, where they could play, learn, and be guided along the way. He believed that education should match how an individual child develops and at their own pace. The first kindergarten was in Wisconsin in the year of 1856.

In the 1700s education was an unfolding process. They were focusing on how to create balanced individuals who could operate in society. They believed that the best education was in rural settings through authentic experiences that were interesting to the children. They wanted to lead the children into the "industrial age". 1760

Maria Montessori believed that the learning environment the children are in is just important as their teacher is. Maria opened the first Montessori school. The Casa Dei Bambini, also known as Children’s House. This school was located in Rome, and she focused on teaching the children how to solve puzzles, cook, and clean up after themselves and also engaging the children in hands-on activities.

In the 1800s day, nurseries started for low-income families who had to work and needed somewhere to take their children while they worked and brought home money to live. Wisconsin had the first 4-year-old program in 1873.

With WW1 starting to happen in the early 1900's, schools started shutting down because the teachers joined the army and had to fight in the war. The great depression also hit so there was very little money going into education. WW2 hit and the women went to work in the factories so private schools emerged so the children had somewhere to go while the men were off at war, and the mothers were working.
For education in the 1900s, they realized that they need to quit PLAY.
John Dewy believed that children needed authentic materials, to learn problem-solving skills and he also believed that children needed to learn how to be individual students and how they need to be their own person and figure out what they like to do, and who their friends are.
