Patroclus was a close friend of Achilles and later died.

The myth goes that Achilles was asked to fight for the Greeks against the Trojans. Achilles refused, and as the Trojans surrounded the Greeks, Patroclus came up with a plan. He would wear Achilles' amour so that he could disguise himself to scare off the Trojans and inspire the Greeks. Achilles agreed but asked Patroclus to be careful and the plan worked. After fighting the Trojans and later leading an assault on the Trojans, Apollo intervened and sneakily wounded Patroclus. Hector, the Trojan hero, came out of nowhere and knocked Patroclus's helmet off, revealing the disguise. Hector killed Patroclus.

The image on the vase likely depicts the fight over Patroclus and his body. As the story goes, this led to Achilles joining the battle to avenge his lover, Patroclus and thus help win the war.

His death, caused in part by the interference of one of the gods on the Trojans' side, is apparenly an example of how human beings can't fight their fate or overcome the powerful forces that exert their will over the world, i.e. fate vs free will.
