For me, when I sit down with a good book I'm flooded with positive memories. My mom made me read so much as a kid that all these familiar and comfortable feelings come back that are so different compared to what I feel when I watch TV or a show. There's nothing like sitting in your bed with the lamp on, flipping through pages, and being immersed in a story. It allows my mind to come up with how I want to portray the characters and my creativity goes to work!

In the second grade, my parents were going through a messy divorce and one

of my teachers, knowing of the situation, noticed that I was becoming
increasingly withdrawn and sad. So, one day, she asked me to go to the
library and pick up a few books for her. I did as she asked and when I
returned, she told me to read them and let her know what I thought. It
wasn't for a grade, it wasn't for any specific assignment. She just
wanted to give me a way to escape. The books she recommended included
the Boxcar Children series and other children's stories where characters
felt lost and struggled with the idea of family. That teacher and those
books helped me find a place of solace, my own hideaway when life
became difficult. I love literacy because it is the key to unlocking
another world where our struggles and dreams are finally understood.
