One room grade schools were common in the 1930s. These schools had many downsides. The teachers and students would get face dust, heat, snow cold, and the building it self could barely hold itself up. Most of the time, student's parents had to chip in to keep the school going.

mayfieldfhs.wikispaces.com

In the 1930s, education for black pupils was very limited compared to that of the white pupils. In 1930, 48 percent of African American adults didn't learn beyond the fifth grade. High schools for blacks were very limited in the south, however there were plenty of high schools for the whites.

mayfieldfhs.wikispaces.com

The biggest reason that education was at its all time low in the 30s, was because of the Great Depression. The Great Depression started in 1929, due to the stock market crash in wall street. Most students then couldn't go to school because they stayed at their farm and worked for money.

www.history.com/
