How are the sharp class differences of industrial Britain represented in the visual source?

It shows class differences by separating the upper class from the working class clearly. As the upper class is living their life full of luxury. The working class of all ages is slaving away in the factory for long work days. It seems as if Hope and Cupid are trying to set the workers free but a factory overseer seems to be blocking their door of entry. Young kids are also illustrated in the back doing what seems to be mine work.

How does this visual source connect the Industrial Revolution with Britain’s colonial empire? Notice the figure in the upper right reclining in exotic splendor, perhaps in India.

The parrot in the upper right-hand corner is a very useful aspect of this picture that connects the Industrial Revolution with Britain's colonial empire. The parrot demonstrates when the wealthy would export parrots from the colonies. In addition, the man in the upper right demonstrates a wealthy Indian official. This is important because their wealth is coming from the colonies and they are exploiting Indian officials in order to receive their goods.

How does it compare with the poster below?

These two images are very similar to each other because they both clearly show class ranks. In the pyramid, the working class are clearly illustrated to be "below" all of the other classes. In the Cartoon, The upper class are seen lounging above of the working class while the working class are clearly slaving away in the mines. Both drawings show the upper class as fancy and laid back and the working class as fatigued and malnourished. Both drawings clearly symbolize being "On top" as being powerful. And being "Below" as no power.

How might you understand the figure of the woman and small angel behind a door on the left?

The small angel is representing cupid and love, and the woman is a symbol of hope and faith. They are being kept out of the lives of the workers by the factory owners. Both love and hope are important aspects of life, especially working in the mines. You can visually see the lack of hope from the workers in the image.

To what extent does the image correspond to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’s description of industrial society in Document 17.4?

These two images demonstrate the same thing, bad working conditions. In the bottom section of Leech's image you can see people obviously miserable, struggling to stand and mostly children. Similarly, in Hine's image it is visible that most, if not all, workers are children.
