  • Ambulatory paraparesis - hind-limbs are crossing over in the gait
  • Scuffing of toenail (digit 3 of the right pelvic limb) from dragging it

Considerations:
  • Proprioceptive deficit
  • Ataxic
  • Thoracic-lumbar spine is the region affected given the paraparesis
  • Peripheral nerve damage
  • Motor deficit

Immediate attention:
  • Nothing is noted to be needing immediate attention. Dog is happy and alert and doesn't seem to be in pain. 

Differential diagnosis:
  • Upper motor neuron deficit
  • Spinal compression 
  • infectious vertebral osteomyelitis diskospondylitis
  • Tumour
  • Meningitis 
  • Sciatica

  • What is your evidence for the patient having a neurological problem? 
  • Which limbs are affected?
  • Are the signs in the limbs consistent with LMN or UMN?
  • Always be challenging your evidence - What does a test tell you? How reliable is it?

Identify likely location of lesions:
  • Which syndrome do the clinical signs appear to reflect?
  • Can they be explained by a lesion in one location?
  • Could you be dealing with more than one lesion or multifocal disease?
