I decided to analyze the story “Between the Pool and the Gardenias” using Psychological Lens. The story that gave its author Edwidge Danticat thePushcart Short Story Prize according to many sources like (Wikipedia).

"Danticat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. When she was two years old, her father André immigrated to New York, to be followed two years later by her mother Rose. This left Danticat and her younger brother Eliab to be raised by her aunt and uncle. At the age of 12, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, to join her parents in a heavily Haitian American neighborhood. After graduating from Clara Barton High School in Brooklyn, New York, Danticat entered Barnard College in New York City. Initially she had intended on studying to become a teacher, but her love of writing won out and she received a BA in French literature" (1). After that she continued writing, and she wrote many books she awarded for. One of these books is Krik Krak which contains the story I will be analyzing here " Between the Pool and the Gardenias". Simple the story talks about a woman who is named Marie. Marie found a dead baby in the street while she was in the city. She took her and named her Rose. she spoke with the dead girl as if she was a live, and she told her about her life. she took her to house she works in. she kept the baby until the baby body start to decay and rot. She put prefume to cover the bad smell coming from the dead body. she deiceded to bury Rose by the gardenias, while she is doing it the Dominican person the owner of the house saw her and the police that she killed the baby for evil purposes.

The analyses of the story

1. Why do certain characters act the way they do?

Marie is the main character in the story so I am going to describe why she acted the way she did. Marie described the baby in a very detailed way more than a mother would who has had a child for many years. This act was because of the life that Marie had, which was full of miscarriages, and she always dreams of having a baby. The love she had towards having a baby pushed her to pick up the dead girl and warmly hugged her. From the other point of view, if we want to compare her actions to the people of the city who they throw out entire children because they can’t afford them. This scenario is the exact opposite because the women who were throwing away their children had no complications with baring children and had never had anything preventing them from having the children. Therefore, they did not understand the value of having a child, and they did not appreciate this blessing.

2. Think of the range of human emotions. How do they come to play in the text?
(happiness, anger, depression, indifference, confusion, etc.)?

Emotions have played the main role in the whole story. Fear and depression were the emotions that forced Marie to leave her husband because he had cheated on her many times before. She had also feared the women that he husband slept with. Also, the deprivation she had in her life from not being able to have her own baby pushed her to take a dead baby found on the street, and bared the risk of being accused for killing the baby as what happened at the end of the story.

3. What did you think of any moral/ethical choices that the characters made?

I think the moral that made Marie take the baby was that she believed that that baby was a gift from heaven and saw the baby as baby Moses or baby Jesus. Her moral was that she needs to be kind towards everyone and needs to care for others especially when she felt that baby was from heaven. If any women has been through all of the accidents that Marie has been through and all miscarriages she had they would have also done the same thing. This really made sense to me that the feeling of becoming a mother or wanting to be a mother made her do all of that.
What would you have done?
What I would have done instead of her in that situation, is that I would be really heartbroken seeing a dead baby on the streets. However, I don’t think I would carry the baby and take her home with me because I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that. Instead I would simple call the police and notify them of the situation and have them decide the best thing to do.

4. Think about the broader social issues the text attempts to address.

I think the text is trying to address the injustice that falls on some people. Although, all that cheatings that Marie’s husband did she is the one she had to flee away. She is the one who was scared of the woman that her husband was sleeping with. It is totally the opposite of the scenario should be. Her husband and the woman he committed adultery with, they should be regretful for what they have done. Also, at the end of the story when the Dominican man accused her of killing the baby. She told him you know me; we have been together. I believe the author tried to drag our attention which is living and being together should build a solid trust. This trust should NOT fade away in a moment of accusation.
