This is a map drawn by Japanese artist to describe the pacific basin as the way they think of it. On the bottom is a picture showing different people from different country (at the bottom left to right, they are The Great Japanese, the Koreans, the Indonesian, and the Chinese. In the land in the middle painted bright red with ships beside is the Empire Japan. They put themselves in the middle with bright colour because they think themselves as the best the world. There are three ships in the map and two of them are bigger then the other one. The two wealth ships are owned by Japan and the small and weak one are from other countries. This shows that Japan think themselves are the best on land and sea. The map shows the location of Japan by showing that they are not connected with any other land and the only way to travel shown in the map is by ship. The water source between Japan and the foreign countries is clearly more dark than the water sources on other places. This adds a sign that it would be a hard ocean to travel across (from their country to the foreign country). The isolation made them think this way for many years.

In the painting below, it shows the process of how farmers collect food. Farmers were the third most important in the social system after Samurai. The farmers were third because they controlled the production of rice through labour. Very important in Japan (the most important commodity in Japan). Their lives were very hard because the had to do labour everyday and had to follow many laws. During the isolation they folioed the hierarchical system, while many other countries had more advanced systems at the time. Because it was manual and slower so the cities were probably smaller than others in different countries. They probably really didn't have a world view because their laws against them for going outside, so they really weren't able to think about the outside world.

This was drawn to describe the incoming of the American Steamships. The little girl wearing a blue green shirt seems to be curious about the ship and was showing her curiosity to the old lady beside her. The old lady however, doesn't want to see that ship and was trying to leave the bay. Because of the isolation she doesn't know what that is and is scared of it trying to run away. When Matthew perry showed of their cannons the Japanese were shocked by the sheer power and force they had, and decide to let him in. If they didn't they'd be destroyed by the american ship as they'd still only have sail boats with much weaker guns to combat it. When the steamboat came in they realized the much bigger world outside of Japan with much higher technology, and how weak they were to this force and could be devastated in a war against it. After Matthew arrived hey probably thought of the world to be much bigger, and that the isolation kept so much secret from them.

Tokugawa Leyasu, the leader of the Edo period and the owned of thousands of samurais. He was the man in charge of the government. He believed in peace and kept that as the number one priority after uniting Japan as one. He lived for 73 years in the family of warriors, his son were in the army and served well for Japan. He cared about his own future but mainly about his people. He treated everyone equally from criminals to farmers. He commanded that no citizens of Japan are allowed to leave this land during the isolation/Edo period. Many citizens was happy under the ruling of Tokugawa.

This is the meaning of peace, the belief that lasted throughout the Edo period under Tokugawa Leyasu. but near the end there were little out breaks At the time Japan didn't want to explore the outside world and since there's no civil war, they stayed in their homeland for a long time. Japan citizens points of view was all about being safe and sometimes selfish because they only care about themselves. The isolation impacted there world-view because with it they thought there was nothing outside of them that was more advanced. And that they were one of the most powerful country, but it was the opposite.

Because of the isolation and the government Tokugawa they found many new mine becoming much more rich because they didn't have to spend coin on trade with many other countries and Tokugawa wanted to become rich. The citizens that exchange item for currency were probably richer than the one's didn't because they didn't have jobs (example the samurai).

This is a samurai. A symbol of a loyalty and strength of Japan. There are samurai with both gender, some are raised as little as 5 and was trained for the next 20 years. But during the Edo period the samurai were useless and because of the forced peace there was no work to be done leaving the samurai struggling to survive. Since there were no wars the jobs of the samurai had to keep so that they could support themselves so they became civil administrators, but took many years for the change. They also probably didn't have a world view because of the law which wouldn't let them leave Japan. Even if they could have a world view I'd think that they be to busy struggling to survive then to have a world view. Their world view (if they had one) world be that it's really peaceful (most of the samurai world view if they had one).

And because of the isolation they couldn't expand at all otherwise they probably could have trade for supplies and grow or got new technologies to expand. But sine their supply was so little it would have been very had to sustain with the growing population. Some people must have been struggling to survive. Most might have been thinking or moving away from Japan. But the Shogun put laws for some of the social system classes so that they couldn't move away.

This is the way how Japan view the level of society. During the Edo period many citizens were between the level of Outcasts-Farmers, but some were still Non-Humans. The class that everyone wants to get is actually not Shogun, but artisans. the reason is many people have the talent and time to become an artisans, but they don't have the money or the level in the society's points-of-view that they need. During the time of isolation the country was needed for samurais (Warriors) Outcasts (for making clothes and digging graves for the armies) and Merchants (propaganda and persuasion), sometimes the army have more than what they needed because they want to show the world that their man force in plenty. The world sees them as a smart organized country when it comes to isolation because they can always have army to prepare for the worst. The Non-Humans really didn't care much about the world but mainly about their future, the Shogun, however, cared the most about how his money. The Artisans and Merchants are very rich and wealthy during the isolation, because they were more necessary in the isolation. They thought of the world as their income of money because they have more paintings to sell to record the timeline and more propaganda ad and persuade the clueless citizens.
