(write your own quote)

"Leadership to me means the ability to move people from where they are to where they need to be in the most efficient manner but with a deep consideration for building up people, even at the cost of efficiency. Leadership in my view is flexible, sometimes you lead from the front, sometimes you lead from the back, sometimes you have to be firm, and sometimes you have to be flexible. Understanding the differences required is what separates a good leader from a great leader"

b.

1. I think it depends on culture and context, but often I have worked well with leaders who are knowledgeable about their field, it is as if they are always 3 steps ahead, and they often inspire people to follow. With good leaders, it´s not even a matter of wanting to be followed, they have this natural pull.

A better approach to leadership:

one that puts serving others -- including employees, customers, and community -- as the number-one priority. Servant leadership emphasizes increased service to others, a holistic approach to work, promoting a sense of community, and the sharing of power in decision making." Robert K. Greenleaf

This image reminds me of such a definition. Even though the leader is at the center, he facilitates and engages others, there is a contribution that can be understood by the gears wrapping each other and forcing each other to move towards a same cause. The leader at the center facilitates and serves so that the machine moves forward.

Erin Meyer describes in her book The Culture Map the different approaches to leadership in different cultures. There are some that would be offended that the leader arrives in the same method of transportation as those under his supervision and would share the same work space. While other cultures would perform better when the leader is an equal.

In my experience there are times when it serves the team for the leader and the team to be all at the same level, each sharing equal loads, and each contributing in equal parts.

I have mixed feelings about this image. It reminds me of those ships were the slaves were the rowing power. What bothers me is that the leader seems to be carried by others. It seems as if there is a certain inequality.

At the same time, it reminds me of a military approach to leadership. Often, this type of leadership seems to be effective. The leader would´ve likely had to have done his share of carrying and now is the one directing from the top.

I have my doubts as to how efficient, sustainable, and collaborative this approach is.

Unlike the gears, this image gives me the impression that the leader is the sole decision maker. There is no collaboration among each other, all interactions are directly with the leader. It´s almost like a micro-manager, and although Steve Jobs was claimed to be such, it is an approach that will probably only work with extremely gifted people, and even then it may only be for a while.

I am not sure if I would draw a different picture. I have worked well in different styles and have seen both good and bad things. Leadership is complicated... I have worked with a SCRUM approach, which takes a servant-leadership style and works in a capacity to remove obstacles so that the team can move forward doing what each does best. There is time for work as individuals, as a team, test the product, and evaluate corrections.

Unit 1: Activity 3 - Trait Theories

What characteristics should leaders have?
I think there are characteristics that will address certain needs depending on the culture, the task at hand, and the team that one works with.

I have seen people that have very little job-relevant knowledge but are great at coordinating teams and helping them perform at their best. I have also had experience with very authoritarian people whom automatically ascend to a place of leadership because people assume they "have what it takes," I have seen them alienate people and have a high turnover rate - they get the job done but at considerable human capital expense.

As to what characteristics a leader should have, I will address this in the next questions.

Choose 5 characteristics a leader should have:

Job-Relevant Knowledge

Honesty and Integrity

Humility

Good Judgement

Persistence

Are there universal traits?
I would tend to agree that there are certain universal traits that are applicable in most if not all situations. Some of the characteristics I have chosen I believe are applicable in different scenarios. Humility to admit when one is wrong or when another member in the team has a better approach will go a long way. Persistence in the right places will bring success against odds. Honesty and integrity will ensure longevity from both team members and "clients".

Can these traits predict leadership in all situations?
If we believe that leadership does not always mean one person, then yes. I think different universal characteristics will be necessary in the life-cycle of a team. Some will shine the brightest in the early stages, some will carry it forward when it seems eternal, and others will come in for the last mile.

Is there real correlation between leadership and traits?
Yes. I believe that there are spheres of "influencers" today that share similar traits. There are certain qualities people look for in those they follow, honesty and integrity being one of those. Without delving into politics too much, in the case of Clinton vs. Trump we can see that people sometimes want certain traits more than others because of the current situation.

Do these traits determine success or achievement?
I don´t think it is a white or black type of science. I think if you have these traits you will be more likely to succeed but I don´t think it guarantees success. Just like having a lot of money does not guarantee you are a good investor, or being talented will guarantee your success... there are outside factors and even personality factors that will influence the outcomes.

What if you have those traits but no motivation?
Well then you have a Ferrari but no fuel. Having a Ferrari can get you a place in the race, but without the desire, the motivation, or even a "why," you are as good as out.

According to that standard does the IB support any specific kind of leadership?
Sustainable Leadership and Pedagogical Leadership

What challenges/implications does that standard create for schools?
Implications:

An efficient and transparent system of communication with the governing body about the implementation and development of the programs. This in turn would require assessments to determine how the programs are being implemented and developed.

The program coordinator has to have the support necessary to carry out the task, the resources to carry out the responsibilities.

To ensure continuity a team of people is necessary, people who buy into the vision. That is, that absorb the DNA and that the DNA is easily transferable to future leaders.

Learning has to be consistent and widespread across all members.

There has to be a type of awareness/consciousness of the environment which requires commitment on behalf of the entire team and an active engagement.

Carrying out a program evaluation requires a system by which to carry that evaluation, manpower who will evaluate it, and the commitment of all stakeholders to participate.

What is Education?
Education to me is the process by which a person acquires knowledge, skills (tools), and even values. It is a process that will prepare the learner to do something. (There must be a purpose(s)).

Why are we doing our jobs in schools? what is education for? What should schools achieve?
Our jobs exist because there is a need to learn. There are traits and skills that must be taught in order for a person to make a living and be a good and well rounded member of a community (society). Education prepares people to have critical thinking skills, a capacity to express themselves in a way that can be understood by others, the ability to interact with others and build with others.
The schools achievement should be a reflection of its graduates. Students that have coursed their program are capable of integrating and building better futures for their communities. Their learners should have the skills necessary to find jobs, trades, or a continued education in a field of their interest that will further contribute to the betterment of their communities.

Attributes and skills for the future:
- Social Intelligence
- Cross cultural skills
- Computational thinking
- Trans-disciplinarity
