Duncan Tonatiuh's inspiration behind his children's book is to create stories where Latino children can relate to the characters and cultures represented in the stories. Tonatiuh uses his experiences as being a student in both Mexico and the United States and as a child from a bicultural household to influence his stories about history, art, and social-justice experiences surrounding Latinos specifically from Mexico. His illustrations are inspired by ancient Mexican Art, specifically from the Aztec, Mayan, and Mixtec cultures.
