The book takes place in Guatemala, specifically, the Ixil Valley. Once they are done climbing the mountains and they're done hiking, they come to Nebaj. It has people that sell goods at markets throughout the streets, such as orange juice and plantains. So I can tell that it is a friendly town. I am pretty sure that it takes place around the 21st century, but it doesn't tell us specifically. The environment right now looks like many things. It has tin roofs for all the houses. I think that that would make it very hard to sleep when it's raining. It also stated that girls wore handwoven clothes from most likely centuries ago. But men wore jeans and t-shirts etc. In America, only some of us wear traditional clothing, based upon our religion. Others, dress like the men, in casual clothing when in town, including me. Overall, Nebaj is very different from America.

Rosa and her "blind" uncle were in front of a church asking for money in Nebaj. A man in a velvet hat and jacket came up to Rosa and gave her a 100 dollar bill.

I wonder why this guy gave Rosa this money. I believe that he did this just to be kind, but what if he isn't?? I can relate to this because at my beach that I go to for the summer, many people there play music on the boardwalk and have a bucket like Uncle and Rosa. This is similar to them because they are practically asking for money. This also reminds me of when I go to New York City, how sometimes the homeless sit on the sidewalks. I remember one time when I went to Boston and this one homeless man always slept on this bench outside the subway. One time after we took the subway after dinner, me and my dad gave the man our left over chicken. Maybe the man in the velvet gave Rosa this money because like us, he felt bad for them.

Rosa's uncle gave someone who sold Pepsi to them a fake 100 dollar bill and she took it.

I really got into the story when this happened. I got very interested to see if the lady at the stand would take the money, which she did. I also ponder where Uncle got the money. Did he print it himself? Did he get it from someone? In the book it stated, "She felt the bill with calloused fingers. She held it up to the light. I was worried she would figure out that the bill was false..." To me, I think that it would be very easy to find out whether the bill is fake or not. In the book Uncle said, "I don't have change", which makes me believe that he spent all his money on buying stuff for Rosa like the day-keeper told him to. Also, when the shop owner gave him back change for the "100", she gave him back real money. That means he didn't actually spend anything and he just got a lot of money back, because I'm sure the Pepsi's didn't cost that much.

The day-keeper is suggesting that she goes to an orphanage for a better life.

I think that what the day-keeper is saying is very rude. Rosa is answering with everything she is asking that she wants to stay with uncle. I think that it was not her place to tell her what she wants and what she needs in her life. This makes me think of a movie I once watched, where this girl only relied on what others thought of her and she would always be a follower because she couldn't make her own decisions. The day-keeper in this situation is acting like the people she would follow because she is practically making the decisions for her. But, unlike the girl in the show, Rosa is staying with her beliefs and isn't listening to what the day-keeper has to say. If Rosa thinks her life is good, let her think that.

Raimundo, Uncle's old friend gets mad at her for her hands being all green and her smelling like onions.

I wonder why they care so much that Rosa is just playing and being a kid. I predict that Raimundo only wants them there to enforce labor on Rosa and Uncle, not even caring about them at all. This ties in with him caring about her hands being dirty because he would rather she work for HIM and make HIM money then for her to do something fun and nice for another family.

He says that it is training her for work.

I think that what he is doing is wrong. I predict that Rosa's "job" is to be a pickpocket and he will get her to take money from people's wallets. This really got me into the story because I didn't think that Raimundo would ever stoop this low. He is teaching a young and innocent girl how to steal and she doesn't think it's wrong.

But something is telling me that something else is going on. I believe that since Rosa didn't fully commit to doing the pickpocket thing that she will go and try and break in and they will call the cops or something bad like that. She will get in trouble in some way.

I didn't think that Rosa would do this, mostly because I would think she would want to protect the only people she has left to call family. I think that it was also very brave of her to do this, knowing that she was part of the plan. I just wonder why Rosa wouldn't have realized earlier that they aren't "saving" the statue they're stealing it because it was kind of obvious.

This also made me believe that the dog will be the one to take care of Rosa when they go wherever they're going. I was just surprised that Rosa agreed to take the dog because she was so scared of it in the beginning, but I'm starting to think she only really believed that because Raimundo told her. But I don't think she should trust Raimundo anymore, given that he could've gotten Rosa arrested.

I think that she should've told Marcos that she was the girl when he said this because she would get a lot of praise, but then on the other hand, if her uncle found out that she was the one who told everyone about the robbery then she would get in so much trouble and you don't know what uncle might do. Overall I really liked this part of the story.

1. Who is your main character? How would you describe him/her?
My main character is Tzunun Chumil, but everyone has learned to call her Rosa. I would describe her as shy, kind, and good hearted. I know shes all of these because she doesn't she doesn't enjoy talking or meeting new people. She also always does the good thing, like for example her telling the priest that uncle and Raimundo were stealing.

2. Who are some secondary characters and why are they important to the story?
Uncle is a secondary character and he took care of Rosa for most of her life. he is rude and self-conceded. Another character is J'aal, which is Rosa's dog. He helps her through the rough times and is there for her. Dona Celestia is a big part or Rosa's life because she has been there for Rosa and helping her through what she needs.

3. What is the problem or conflict of the book?
The problem is that Rosa doesn't know where she came from or who she "belongs" to. She is also trying to find herself emotion wise.

4. How is the main character trying to resolve the problem?
Rosa is trying to fix the problem by sending letters all over the place seeing if there were any people that were Chumils.

5. What do you like so far about the book? AND WHY.
I like that Rosa is on her own and being by herself because she is free and doesn't have to live by rules.

6. What don’t you like so far about the book? AND WHY.
I don't like that Uncle is such a bad person because when I see people like this in books I just get very aggravated.
