In a small village in Central Java lived an old widow named Mbok Srini. She was very lonely, for she had no children, and every day she prayed that God would grant her a daughter. Her loneliness often left her sitting in silence, and her longing for a child grew stronger with each passing day.

One night, Mbok Srini dreamed of a giant who ordered her to retrieve a bundle from beneath a great tree in the forest. The next morning, she followed the dream and discovered a single cucumber seed. In her heart, she believed it was a sign. She even heard the voice of the giant promising that the seed would give her a child if she planted it, yet also threatening her with a future demand.

Mbok Srini planted the cucumber seed and cared for it with great hope. For two months she tended the plant, and in her mind she imagined the cucumber growing large and golden. One morning, she believed she heard the cry of a baby from within the cucumber. Convinced, she split the fruit in her imagination and saw a baby girl, whom she named Timun Mas.

Day after day, Mbok Srini cared for Timun Mas with a heart full of love. She truly believed Timun Mas grew into a beautiful and intelligent young girl. She imagined speaking with her, cooking meals for her, and even receiving replies from her beloved child. Yet all of this existed only within her mind.

Until one night, Mbok Srini dreamed once more of the giant who came to claim his promise. She was terrified and felt she needed to protect her daughter. In her imagination, she traveled to a mountain and met a holy hermit who gave her four bundles containing cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and shrimp paste.

When the day of collection arrived, Mbok Srini imagined the giant coming to chase her daughter. She pictured Timun Mas fleeing, scattering the cucumber seeds that turned into sprawling vines, needles that became a forest of sharp bamboo, salt that transformed into the sea, and shrimp paste that became boiling mud that swallowed the giant whole.

In her vision, Timun Mas returned safely. Mbok Srini felt overwhelming joy and embraced the child she imagined standing before her.

But in reality, there was no one in the house but Mbok Srini herself.

A passing neighbor saw her smiling alone, hugging the empty air as though holding a child. They realized she had lived too long in solitude, and her desperate longing for a child had driven her to create a world of her own within her mind.

From that day on, the villagers visited Mbok Srini more often, keeping her company and caring for her so she would no longer be alone. though in her heart, the image of Timun Mas would forever live as the child she so dearly longed for.
