Hadith of Jibraeel On the authority of Umar (r) who said: One day while we were sitting with the Messanger of Allah (s), there came before us a man with extremely white clothing and extremely black hair. There were no signs of travel on him and none of us knew him. He [came and] sat next to the Prophet (s). He supported his knees up against the knees of the Prophet (s) and put his hand on his thighs. He said, ‘O Muhammad, tell me about Islam.’ The Messanger of Allah (s) said, ‘Islam is to testify that there is none worthy of worhsip except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messanger of Allah, to establish the prayers, to pay the zakat, to fast [the month of] Ramadan, and to make pilgrimage to the House if you have the means to do so.’ He said, ‘You have spoken truthfully [or correctly].’ We were amazed that he asks the question and then says that he had spoken truthfully. He said, ‘Tell me about Imaan (faith).’ He [the Messanger of Allah (s)] responded, ‘It is to believe in Allah, His angles, His books, His messangers, the Last Day and to believe in the divine decree, [both] the good and the evil thereof.’ He said, ‘You have spoken truthfully.’ He said, ‘Tell me about al-Ihsaan (goodness).’ He [the Prophet (s)] answered, ‘It is that you worship Allah as if you see Him. And even though you do not see Him, [you know] He sees you.’ He said, ‘Tell me about [the time of] the Hour,’ He [the Prophet (s)] answered, ‘The one being asked does not know more than the one asking.’ He said, ‘Tell me about it’s signs.’ He answered, ‘The slave-girl shall give birth to her master, and you will see the barefooted, scantily-clothed, destitiute shepards competing in constructing lofty buildings.’ Then he went away. I stayed for a long time. Then he [the Prophet (s)] said, ‘O Umar, do you know who the questioner was?’ I said, ‘Allah and His Mesanger know best.’ He said, ‘It was [the angel] Gabriel who came to teach you your religion.’ (Recorded in Muslim)

                       1. Have a sincere intention
An example is: I am studying to help the ummah with this beneficial knowledge, to enlighten
my intellectual growth and that of others with this beneficial knowledge, drawing closer to Allah as a result.
It is very important that we have good intentions because it is narrated that Umar bin al-Khattab, , said: I heard the Messenger of Allah , say:
“Actions are (judged) by motives/ intention (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated.” [Al-Bukhari]
2. Study with ihsaan (excellence)
Grand intentions require grand efforts. We must strive to study to the best of our ability and
aim for excellence, not perfection. Research shows that perfectionism triggers anxiety and leads
to procrastination. Alhamdulillah, Allah prescribed excellence and not perfection in all our works.
Prophet Muhammad said:
“Verily, Allah has prescribed Ihsan towards everything. Therefore, when you kill, kill in the best manner. When you slaughter, slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife and give ease to his animal.” [Muslim]
3. Exhibit tawakkul (reliance upon Allah)
While doing our best, we must rely upon Allah for the results. We must trust that He will make things easy for us and will grant us success.
This is an essential etiquette for seeking knowledge and in every endeavor we undertake because
we acknowledge that any success that comes our way is through Allah alone and is not a result of our efforts. Allah has said:
“I am as my slave expects Me to be.” (Agreed upon). Imam an-Nawawi (may Allah be pleased with him) commented on this, saying: “The scholars say that expecting the best of Allahis to expect that He will have Mercy on him and relieve him of hardship.”
4. Eliminate bad habits or manners
and stay away from sins and the routes that lead to them. Imam Shaafi’i complained to his
teacher, Waqi, about his weak memory and his teacher advised him to stop committing sins,
adding that knowledge is the light of Allah and Allah does not grant His light to sinners.
Thus, we must identify our bad habits or sins and work hard to eliminate them from our lives, while seeking Allah’s help.
5. Thank Allah
especially when you have learned something well or have completed your study. Allah says that if we are thankful to Him, He will grant us more out of His bounty:
“And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshiping none but Allah), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe.” [Quran: Chapter 14, verse 7]
6. Engage in istighfaar and dhikrullah
Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“When I am confused in my understanding of an issue in religion, I forthwith beseech Allah to
forgive me one thousand times – maybe a little more or maybe a little less.
Then, Allah opens what was closed for me and I come to understand.”
7. Make dua to Allah
to help you to study with ihsaan and to make things easy for you. To combat laziness, supplicate:
“Allaahumma innee a‛oodhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazani, wal-‛ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli, wal-jubni, wa ḍala‛id-dayni, wa ghalabatir-rijaal”
meaning: O Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety, and sorrow, and weakness,
and laziness, and miserliness, and cowardice, and the burden of debts and from being
overpowered by men.
If you encounter any difficulty, supplicate:
“Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja’altahu sahla, wa ‘anta taj-alul hazna idha shi’ta sahla”
meaning: O Allah! There is nothing easy except what You make easy, and You make the difficult
easy if it be Your Will.
Supplicate to Allah to increase you in knowledge:
” Rabbi zidnee ‘ilma”, meaning “O my Lord, increase me in knowledge.”

Click to read more: http://productivemuslim.com/seeking-knowledge/#ixzz4twlMNnh6
Follow us: @AbuProductive on Twitter | ProductiveMuslim on Facebook

The Five Questions of Angel GabrielCompiled by Javed Ahmad No introduction and conclusion are necessary as the following saying of our Prophet (SM) found in ‘the Muslims’ explains “Islam” in a nutshell. The story makes it clear that the angel came to ensure that we understood the meaning of the ‘five pillars of Islam’ through the five verification questions. No explanation is also required as the story is straight forward and the predictions have already been fulfilled. This particular story teaches us complete Islam in just one A4 sized page! And that’s all it takes to be a Muslim really.“Omar ibn Khattab narrated, “As we were sitting one day before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a man suddenly appeared. He wore pure white clothes and his hair was dark black—yet there were no signs of travel on him, and none of us knew him.He came and sat down in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), placing his knees against his, and his hands on his thighs. He said, “O Muhammad! Tell me about Islam.”The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Islam is to bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God; and to perform the prayer (i.e., the five daily prayers); pay Zakat (i.e., 2.5% of annual compulsory charity on total saved wealth); fast Ramadan (i.e., compulsory annual fasting in the month of Arabic lunar month of Ramadan); and to perform Hajj (i.e., pilgrimage) to the House (in Mecca) if you are able.”The man said, “You have spoken the truth,” and we were surprised that he asked and then confirmed the answer. Then, he asked, “Tell me about eemaan (i.e., faith and belief).” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “It is to believe in Allah; His Angels; His Books (i.e., all scriptures before Qur’an); His Messengers (i.e., all prophets before Muhammad (SM)); the Last Day (i.e., the Day of Judgment); and in destiny (i.e., heaven and hell)—its good and bad.”The man said, “You have spoken the truth. Now, tell me about ihsan (i.e., spiritual excellence).” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “It is to serve Allah as though you see Him; and if you don’t see him, (know that) He surely sees you.”“Now, tell me of the Last Hour,” asked the man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “The one asked knows no more of it than the one asking.”“Then tell me about its signs,” said the man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “That a slave woman would give birth to her mistress; and that you would see barefooted, naked shepherds competing in the construction of tall buildings.”Then the visitor left, and I waited a long time. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, “Do you know, Omar, who the questioner was?”I replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said (Allah bless him and give him peace), “It was Jibril.(Gabriel) He came to you to teach you your religion.” “
