Adults can encourage children to make healthier food choices by making the healthier food choice look more interesting for example making faces out of fruit and vegetables. Put attractive age appropriate posters up around the setting promoting healthy eating and explaining what fatty foods can do to your body. Get the children to try different new foods out, things that are different cultural based that still promote healthy eating. Do fun activities that promote healthy eating such as cooking with the children once or twice a week, making it fun as a treat. Praise the children when they are eating the healthier option. Depending how long the day is, give the child a fruit and veg snack and then later after dinner perhaps give the child a bread based snack to show they are eating healthy throughout the day.

At the Mulberry Bush day nursery, the adults encourage healthy eating by letting the children cook once a month. They make things such as making fruit salads, sandwiches or a soup. I think they should do it at least once or twice a week because it encourages children to do more cooking and they will learn a lot more things such as what the ingrediants is called. The staff also supports other dietary requirements such as allergies, relational reasons and ethnicity reasons. Also to make sure that no mistakes made, inside the setting they have pictures of the children and their needs on the wall, this information is given by the parents when they join the nursery.

Kamal goes to Mulberry Bush Day Nursery and his parents have told the staff not to give the child any dairy products because it triggers his eczema. His parents have also provided the nursery with alternative foods such as: milk; yoghurt and ice-cream.

The student on work placement has been asked to help serve the meals. The children are given yoghurt, however Kamal can’t have this but they have already set up Kamal’s own pudding, it’s in the kitchen. The student who is serving the meals can’t be bothered to go and get him his pudding; therefore he just gave Kamal the same yoghurt as everybody else. This is non inclusive practice because the student should be aware of the dangers and the student should be supervised in case an incident like this happeneds. In his case, Kamal’s dietary needs have not been met and because of this “his eczema has flared up in the night.” This will have an effect on Kamal’s attendance at the nursery as he will miss a day.
