What does this mean? You can remix, use, and replay their music as long as you give original credit to the artist. If you are going to play your music at a public event (for profit), you have to sign-up for a commercial license. Notice that each artist can give a specific type of license to their music. The visual code that the site uses is include below. Check with each song before you download to make sure it can be used to suit your purposes.

You do. Because, like I said, it's the law. But don't worry. We've compiled some resources and support to help you along the way. Take a look at each post and it's description. It will let you know how you can use these sites in your project. Thanks to creativecommons.org, I can share a brief overview of each type of license. (See how I gave credit? That's what we're talking about)

Notice the differences. Some licenses allow you to replay and use, but not remix or change. These may not be the best for you. You will see examples for each of these types of licenses around on this pallet. Here is a site that allows users to upload sound files for fellow users. 

Pros: Wide-variety of sound effects, many are attribution, public domain dedication or share a like. The user policy is written in reader-friendly terms. You are able to share sounds for others. 

Cons: You must have a profile to download sounds.The community of users moderates content, and the site has to right to take down your work or ban if you if you breach their user policy. Some users ask for a donation or payment through Paypal

Works like these are copyrighted, meaning the writer is making a living from the writing, performing, and distribution or his/her work. Please respect and enjoy what they've done. Be inspired and appreciate, but do not infringe on their copyright. Leave these copyrighted works to the professionals. 

Here is an example of some works that available for your to enjoy, but not redistribute, remix, or borrow for your use.

You may have heard that Youtube has a lot of free sounds to download. In fact, you may have seen a video like this one that shows you how to access them.

But what you may not know is that many of these sound files fall under the Share A Like or No Derivatives portion of the Creative Commons Licensing. That means that many of these sounds are for YouTube videos only or cannot be cut, remixed, or altered. Rather limiting. 

Watch this video, but don't trust everything you hear on the internet. Read the copyright restrictions 
on any specific sample that you want to use. It may not be the right one for you.

You may stumble across sites like these. They claim to give you MILLIONS of free downloads. All free to use and copyright free. Sounds to good to be true?
Well it isn't, and it is. 

Sites like these ask for a yearly membership fee. You pay to use the site, so in effect, you are really paying for the use of the sounds. They are not really free for you to use without any strings. If you are making a living on your remixes, and sound effects, sites like these can be useful. For small projects, however, stick to sites that can you a more limited library, but do not ask for a credit card.

Here is a site that offers some free sounds. More importantly, it gives you a nice break-down of what it means to own, use, and redistribute sounds. Did you know that when you purchase music you don't actually own that sound?

This article explains that and more. They also give a very clear explanation about how you are allowed to use any sound from this site.

iTunes is a service that lets you pay for the right to stream music. Yes, from multiple devices, but that does not mean that you own that music. You can read there full license agreement here, but basically, the music that you have on your phone or device is not free for the remixing. Take a look at these other options. They will be of more use to you.
