The leaders of the Aztecs were called calpullis, a calpullis is a group of interrelated people who made sure the communities were protected. The calpulli usually was a group and in the group, there was a main calpulli also known as the headman, the headman was a part of the city council. They had great amounts of wealth and food. Due to this when the Spanish arrived the Aztecs were really friendly giving the Spanish food, gold, and other resources.
