My understanding of the American Dream

The thesis I chose for this project is that the American dream is alive and well. However, it is not the same for everyone. My understanding of what the "American Dream" is is that it used to be a white picket fence, cookie cutter house, and a small family. Nowadays, that dream is different for everyone. Some may still have the idea of having that classic dream, but many others will choose something way different. Not everyone wants the small family, white fence lifestyle, but has their own unique view of what their "American Dream" is. For me, my dream is to be genuinely happy with where I go in life and be proud of the person I become. I want a family and a job that I love and look forward to pursuing. To me, the "American Dream" is being successful in life, no matter how one would define that success.

"In today's world the American dream is a lot harder to achieve than it used to be. With how insane prices are for living and just basic necessities, you have to work a lot harder to make it in this country. Personally, I have been able to achieve what I'd say is my "American dream", I have great kids, a wonderful husband, and a roof over my head. I have everything I could ask for, and I'd say I am genuinely happy. The biggest piece of advice I would give to you is to go to college. I don't mean that you have to go to Stanford or some big university, but at least go to community college, see what's out there, and get a degree. Nowadays, having a degree is so important in getting far in life, especially with how many jobs are in the current world."

My thesis is that the American dream is still alive, however, it is different for everyone. The Chapter I chose was 22. At the end of the chapter, Grande reflects on how she would have never thought she would be where she is today. She talks about how she achieved her American dream. Grande reveals that the American dream is possible for anyone and that everyone can achieve it.

The article I found is titled "Is the American Dream still alive today?" and is written by an MH contributor. The article says that "many people now may argue that the American dream is dead and buried." The writer of the article states that, even though people may not think it's alive, it is. One of their reasons is that America "has very friendly business tax rates, making it easy for people to start a business." The American dream, however, is not easy to obtain, with how competitive this country is, but it still is possible and is very much alive today.

The song I chose to is American Dream by MKTO. The song talks about how they want to start over in California, from "Nowhere, USA." The lyrics say, "Say goodbye to white picket fences, I don't want a job, I want a life," and "This ain't the same summer song that you used to know." These lyrics stating that, even though the American dream is still very much alive, it has changed since the classic dream of the 1950s. That everyone wants a different dream in the United States and not what used to be the typical dream.

The title of the video I found is "The American Dream: Is it Still Alive?". The background of the video talks about what Americans think about the dream, how it affects them, and what their opinion on it is. Their results show that 8 in 10 Americans are on their way to achieving their dream or are already living it. Traditionally, the "American dream" is associated with wealth, a successful career, and a big home. However, they also state that significantly more people think that freedom to live their lives as they choose and having a fulfilling family life is more essential than home ownership, and wealth. So even though some may think the dream is declining, many still think it is attainable and in their reach.
