A routine is a process or procedure followed regularly. For example, the way students enter the classroom and get materials each day is a routine. A strategy implies that there is a goal in mind and the strategy is your game plan for achieving that goal.

One of my favorite lessons that gets students to focus on making their process visual is text graffiti. It is similar to annotating in that students are reacting to the text by writing down their reactions/thoughts near the original text. The main difference is that students are in groups and doing close reads of provocative excerpts that make you want to talk about them. Instead of talking out loud, students write or draw their conversations with each other on the text directly. After about a minute, groups pass their quote on to the next group and go again. Also gets them really eager to talk once the silent period is over.

Engaging warm ups are a daily part of the routine in my classroom and I try to choose some sort of short, highly engaging media that will be somehow connected to our lesson. Students always consume the media (read/watch/listen, etc), then talk, then write, then share out and it starts class with creative thought, the chance to talk, and an opportunity to write.

I started the routine of Talk-Read-Talk-Write in my classroom last year and had a lot of success with it. My students knew that each lesson would be constructed in a way where they had to TALK about an engaging picture/quote/question/idea, READ a text which relates to the idea or their notes to refresh the lesson while coming up with level 2 and level 3 questions, TALK about their questions and whatever prompt I have for them to discuss, and WRITE a response to what they discussed. Throughout the lesson they are being forced to think on a variety of levels and either teach themselves the new skill (through discovery) or develop questions to deepen their understanding.

A routine is a way of completing a task; it helps in organization and setting the environment. Whereas when I think of a strategy, I tend to think about an action that is tied to skills mastery and it's something that is more tied to curriculum instruction.

Cassy Robles: A classroom routine is something that should be practiced by the teacher and the students with regularity and without having to review instructions. A classroom strategy should be more of an intervention in response to student behavior or specific needs. I see classroom strategies as a way to differentiate for student behaviors. Some kids need different types of attention at different times to feel as if the space for learning is safe and comfortable.

Cassy Robles: Before we write anything down, I give students time to think quietly for 1-2 minutes. Then I tell them that they need to share with a partner or small group. I think talking allows students more freedom to brainstorm ideas without feeling limited--I have noticed students don't like to write things that are rough and they especially don't want anyone to read something they have written that is rough, but they will most certainly say the very first thing that comes to mind.

Cassy Robles: giving students time to think...it seem obvious, but it's easy for teachers to feel like time spent quietly without any instruction or when we are not observing tangible student work as a waste of time. However, when I think about how I am able to draft and create new ideas, I ALWAYS feel like I need a minute to just stop, be still, and think. I try to make sure that I am giving students this kind of time, but I make sure this becomes a regular routine where students know the rules: sit quietly (close your eyes if you're not too cool), no writing, no sharing verbally even if it's a really good idea etc.
