Talented students from Harlow College showcased a variety of art and media forms in a new exhibition in the town centre Gibberd Gallery. 2015 offered those studying media, art, photography, journalism, graphic design and film a chance to parade their work to friends, family and industry guests. Highlights of the exhibition included a children's book written in collaboration with The Down's primary school and graphics student's designs to modify Stansted Airport.

Joseph Campos, 19, a Level 3 media student and curator of the exhibition, said: "The main benefits of an exhibition like this are that it gives students an opportunity to showcase their work to the public, which they don't always get the chance to do. "For myself, as a curator, it's given me an insight into the real world in terms of prepping and organising a big event."

Karen Spencer, college principal, said: "We want to thank the Gibberd Gallery for providing our students with the opportunity to showcase their creative work at Reflect 2015. "As a college we really believe in giving students opportunities that stretch and challenge them - exhibiting in a professional gallery is a fantastic experience and I was blown away with the quality of their work."

Star students at Harlow College enjoyed the red carpet treatment at their very own Oscars to round-off a successful year.

Graduates from media, journalism, photography and animation were celebrated and awarded for their stunning projects at a glitzy ceremony at Harlow's Cineworld last week.

Prizes including: best actor and acress, best animation, best documentary and best graphic designer were dished out at the awards presented by second year media student Donald Matanga.

Assistant Academy Manager, Delta Muntean said: "The students collaborated with other departments, in particular music, where they had their music videos filmed. It gave them a real opportunity to be in the limelight and get some publicity.

The Oscars is an opportunity to showcase student's work and also a chance for them to see it on the big screen."

The nominated teachers were Delta Muntean, Assistant Academy Manager for Vocational Journalism, Media & Photography, Stevie Doherty, Senior Tutor in Performing Arts and Simon Fitzjohn, Senior Tutor in HE Journalism & Media. They received their awards as part of the national ‘Thank a Teacher Day’.

Local student Sophie Stacey from Harlow College has won Media BTEC Student of the Year at the National BTEC Awards, held in London on 3rd July 2014. The ceremony was held in recognition of the nearly one million students around the country who are studying BTEC qualifications this year. Pearson, who own Edexcel, the awarding body for BTECs, received over 1000 nominations across the 20 award categories for this year’s Awards.

Nominated by her tutor Lorraine Love, Sophie switched to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production at Harlow College after realising her AS levels were not giving her the practical experience in film making that she wanted. She is set to achieve a triple-starred distinction and has been accepted by Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication to study for a degree in Digital Film Production.

Luke’s focused on fundraising to film his post-nuclear drama

A YOUNG filmmaker is hoping to kickstart his first short film project with a little help from the public.Luke Cliff, pictured, was on a media studies course at Harlow College when he first heard about Kickstarter - a website that allows people to fund creative projects. Now the aspiring director is hoping to raise £500 to make his film, Aftermath.Set in the 21st century after a nuclear war, it tells the story of a small group of people - including the protagonist Oscar - who leave their nuclear bunker and re-enter what is left of the world.“I have pretty much been doing this all my life,” said Luke. “A few of my friends and I were messing around with film ideas and the idea for Aftermath came from that.“I heard about Kickstarter at college where one of our units was about funding and it seemed like a good idea to use it for Aftermath.”
