A universe of ineffable gaudiness spun itself out in his brain while the clock ticked on the wash-stand and the moon soaked with wet light his tangled clothes upon the floor.

Fitzgerald uses the character Gatsby to present the pursuit of the American Dream through self-indulgence in the roaring '20s. Through the metaphorical declarative, 'The universe of ineffable gaudiness...' The noun 'universe' suggests the vastness of Gatsby’s desire which causes his downfall and symbolises the myth of the meritocracy. This reveals how he has created an entire world of fantasy different from reality. The goal of the American Dream is not inherently built to favour the working class.

Ironically, Gatsby’s pursuit of the American Dream is what killed him later on, suggesting that the American Dream is a harmful concept created by society.

The myth of the American dream is portrayed through the uncertain tone of the paradox ‘unreality of reality’,the oxymoronic noun phrase ultimately alluding to delusion highlighting the false ideology surrounding the American dream .This unrealistic concept is furthered by the metaphorical noun phrase ‘fairys wings’ referring to daisy maidan name faye, this language of mythology juxtaposes the concrete noun ‘rock’ ultimately making it a metaphor for gatsbys idealism and the myth of the american dream as his pursuit for wealth is founded on his pursuit for daisys love.

Fitzgerald portrays the myth of the American dream in chapter 6 as an all consuming obsession for Gatsby. This can be seen in the quote "The most grotesque and fantastic conceits haunted him in his bed at night". The juxtaposition of the modifiers 'grotesque' and 'fantastic' represent how there are both good and bad elements towards having the American dream as Gatsby is obtaining wealth that comes with the myth however he does this through criminal means. It links to earlier in the novel when they are talking about the valley of the ashes
