Many of the sons went to far places to find rare and expensive food. But the youngest son, Lang Liêu, was very poor. He stayed home and thought about what food really meant. He used simple things like sticky rice, mung beans, and pork to make two rice cakes. He made one cake square (square cake) to show/ symbolize the Earth, and he made one cake round (round cake) to show/ symbolize the sky.

When the king saw and tasted the cakes, he was very happy. Lang Liêu explained that the cakes showed love for family, nature, and life. The king was touched by this and chose Lang Liêu to be the next king.

Since then, Vietnamese people always make Bánh Chưng and Bánh Dày for Tết. Families cook them together, give them to others, and put them on the altar for their ancestors. These cakes are not just food—they are symbols of love, respect, and tradition. Many foreigners eat these cakes when they visit Vietnam, but they may not know the beautiful story behind them. It is a story that shows the heart of Vietnamese culture.
