I am particularly excited to be here because I believe that understanding the local culture, community, and people is essential to being an effective teacher. That's why I chose to attend this class- not just to fulfill the certification requirements, but to gain a deeper understanding of rich heritage and traditions that shape the lives of my students and their families.

As someone who is new to this region, I recognize the importance of immersing myself in the local culture and learning from the people who call Shishmaref, Alaska home. Although my background is mostly in teaching ELL students, I also teach ELA. I have been in Alaska for two years with my loyal companion, Pez. He is a rescue dog that has traveled more than in his life than most people. Like me, he does not enjoy plane rides very much.

My background in education has taken me across the globe, including Japan, China, and Saudi Arabia. I have always been passionate about fostering a learning environment that values academic growth, cultural pride, and student success.

I believe in the power of community, collaboration, and the transformative impact of education. Whether supporting teachers, working with families, or advocating for students, my goal is always to create a school environment where every learner thrives.

I also have a daughter who attends high school in the Anchorage School District. As an Alaskan Native, she brings a unique perspective, and I strive to balance my work with a deep respect and understanding of Alaskan Native cultures and traditions. I am entering my third year of teaching in Alaska and have been in the Arctic region for all of that time. I have taught all the major academic subjects at the high school level, including Inupiaq Studies, which is a required course in our district. I learn more about the local culture every single day and try hard to incorporate my new knowledge into my coursework, regardless of the subject. This fits well with my lifelong avocation of exploring indigenous cultures around the world. I look forward to taking this all to another level with my work in this course.

We plan to stay in Alaska forever when my husband retires. I look forward to learning more about Alaska and the community.

I joined ASD as an Elementary School Counselor in March of 2023. I am happy to be a part of such wonderful schools and community! I hold a MS in Counseling Education, and I have work experience in healthcare and residential treatment programs. Before joining ASD, I was working in the community as a clinical therapist with teenagers and their families. I am passionate about listening to, talking to, connecting with, and helping families and children of all ages. I am proficient in successful intervention strategies, coping skills, and evaluation techniques.

I have been blessed to have the opportunity to teach students with mild to severe disabilities for 26 years from grades K-12. It is what I do. Working in this field allows me to fulfill a passion of mine, which is to be of service to others and help others.

I get to work at the Adult Community Transition program in the Anchorage School District. It is an amazing program, by far the best environment, program and position I have had the privilege of working in throughout my career. I am excited to learn more about Alaska and the people who live here.

Since 2006, my family has fished on the west side of Kodiak a boat ride from the village of Larsen Bay. Throughout our years traveling between city living and remote living, we have connected with residents of this remote community. I'm looking forward to this class to reflect on the culture of the residents with whom our family has been involved over the years.

I am passionate about culturally responsive educational practice and the importance of collaborative relationships between schools, the community, and families. I am eager to learn about Alaska's culture and history, and excited to dive into this course with my colleagues. I know that the valuable information shared will shape my practice as a school psychologist and enable me to better serve our awesome students and families.

I hold a MA in Reading and am currently pursing my Post-Graduate certificate in Educational Administration. I am a Principal intern and will be working as an MTSS Coordinator for this upcoming school year. I am deeply committed to culturally responsive teaching and ensuring high-quality, equitable education for all. I am eager to learn more about our state's history and the Alaskan Native population so I can better support our students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds.

I live and work in White Mountain, Alaska. White Mountain is a small city on the Seward Peninsula about 75 miles east of Nome. I teach math, science, and shop. I live on the Iditarod Trail. My wife and I host the ITI athletes each year who race from Anchorage to Nome each year by walking, biking or skiing.

I truly enjoy being here, the support I’ve received, and the welcoming environment have made a big difference in my experience. I’ve especially come to appreciate the beauty of the snow, which is something new for me.

Teaching students here can be challenging at times, but once you get to know them, you realize how kind-hearted they are and how deeply they value their culture. I admire how united they are and how they always look out for one another.

I am a secondary teacher working with students from 6th grade through 12th grade. I primarily teach ELA courses, but i have a lot of electives under my belt as well. I'm looking forward to working through this course and learning all i need to know about the history and populations of Alaska.

I am enjoying the challenges of being a "new" teacher again; I am teaching a different age and ability level of students than in my previous experience as well as teaching in a community with different cultures, history, and resources than those I have taught in previously. I'm on my 3rd year here in Alaska. I work in one of the schools in Anchorage School District. I have taught K-6 learners. I am taking this course to fulfill the Alaska Teaching Certification requirements.

I just finished my first year as a Self-contained intermediate Intensive Resource Special Education teacher. I taught 2nd-5th graders. I grew up in Wisconsin. Military brought my family up to Alaska in 2002. I homeschooled my three children then went back to the classroom as a tutor, Kindergarten aid, Special Education Paraprofessional, then decide to get my Alaskan certificate to teach Special Education. It was a little rough getting back into teaching and going back to college to get a Special Education degree at 60 years old. I had a great year and am looking for many more years teaching. I am looking forward to this journey to learn more about this Awesome state!

I was born and raised in New Jersey, I moved to Wasilla AK about 3 years ago. I spent about 10 years active duty Air Force as a mental health tech. I have been a teacher in the Philippines for 17 years and through the J1 visa as an exchange visitor program, I got here in Alaska. I came from a tropical country where 90-100F range of temperature to a very cold environment which I learn to appreciate and fell in love given the nature at it's best.

For 2 years from September 2022-2024, I served in Ipalook ES, back in North Slope Borough School District. Just recently served a year here Anchorage School District with Wendler Middle School teaching 6th Grade Math and will continue to serve the school this August 2025.

A total of 20 years serving students locally and internationally.

I enrolled in this course to fulfill the Alaska's Teaching Certification requirements.

I have been a speech language pathologist since 2017 and am taking this course to fulfill the requirement for the Type C license so I can continue to pratice in Alaska.

I am a retired Army soldier who spent 23 years doing so many things in the army.

I am a lifetime learner and I am always curious to learn new things. I taught on a small island near Juneau last year and have from that experience learned quite a bit about Native Alaskans and Alaska in general.

I grew up in Washougal, WA, and moved to POW after my Aunt sent me a job application to the school where she taught at for the majority of her career. I am glad to have so much family on the island!

My name is Ronald, and I moved to Alaska from the city (Denver) to be out in nature and live with the trees in a small town. I have lived in Gustavus for two years now, and I feel wonderful here; I hope to never have to leave.

I got my first degree in physics before moving over to teaching, and I now teach math. I'm a huge old-school gaming nerd, I grew up on Dungeons and Dragons and old PC games, and I am currently making my own pc-game in my spare time after work.

I sometimes teach computer-related things as electives, because I enjoy the content and do some amateur coding as I mentioned, and I handle our schools e-sports team. I am always the geekiest teacher in whatever school I work in.

My name is Ty Shoemaker. I was born in Anchorage and grew up down in Nikiski. After graduating high school, I went to college at UAF in Fairbanks. Once I finished my BS in Interdisciplinary Studies, I worked for a campus ministry called Chi Alpha for several years. During that time I met my wife, who at the time came up to Alaska to be a teacher. She was offered a job out in Tuluksak Alaska and after 1 year of long distance I joined her the following year.

Currently we are both in Tuluksak Alaska where I teach High School Social Studies for the 7-12 grades and one of the aspiring administrators that helps run the school. We have a one year old boy and enjoy exploring the many wonders of living out in rural Alaska.

I'm originally from the Chicago area, but moved up to Kenai a few years ago after living in Portland, Oregon for 10 years. I have had a wonderful few years teaching middle school history, and am looking forward to many more in the future. It is really thrilling to see all these excited educators writing in from every corner of our enormous state, and I'm looking forward to learning more about it.

I have been living in Gustavus, Alaska for the past two years now, along with my wife who has a remote job working for a non profit high end coffee distribution company and our dog Maggie which is an Australian Shepherd. We all have developed a great love for the community of Gustavus and the lifestyle it offers. 

We've also enjoyed slowly getting to some of the outdoor recreation this city has to offer.

I am originally from Michigan and moved to Alaska to enjoy the outdoors and go play in the mountains. I have lived here for about two years and love the variety of outdoor activities Alaska has to offer. I have worked for the school district here in Anchorage and have really enjoyed the exposure Anchorage offers to a variety of cultures. Excited to officially learn more about them!

I am a retired teacher from North Carolina who decided to get back into the classroom. I am currently enjoying teaching at the Alaska Native Culture Charter School in Anchorage, Alaska. I teach Health and Physical Education and strive to include Native Values in my instruction. I have wonderful students and a supportive husband who helps out with afterschool clubs and my Kindergarten classes (thank goodness). I'm Mira, and this is my second year teaching 2nd grade in Selawik, Alaska. I truly love the people and the community here. I'm eager to learn more about Alaska-its educational system, culture, and rich history-which led me to enroll in the Alaska Alive course. I am currently in my third year as an Assistant Principal in Selawik, Alaska, and entering my tenth year in education. Before making the move north, I taught in Arkansas. Since arriving in Alaska, I’ve fallen in love with the community and am committed to making a meaningful, lasting difference in the lives of our students and families.

I just graduated from the University of South Dakota with my teaching degree, and I'm now beginning a training internship aimed at equipping teachers for rural Alaskan communities. I'm excited to learn more about the beauty of Native Alaskan culture and communities.

I am a Math teacher of Aqqaluk High School/Noorvik School handling Math 7-12. I am comfortable and feel at home with my station since Alaskans here treat me well. I enrolled this subject because I want to know learn and understand Alaska's Education related to Alaska's culture so that I can integrate my subject to their cultural standard. In doing so, my learners will become interested and find our subject meaningful as we navigate the learning process.

I am originally from Arkansas and this is my 3rd year teaching in Alaska. I spent one year in Togiak and this is my 2nd year teaching in Sand Point. Both communities focus heavily on fishing and the ocean. I look forward to learning more about Alaska as a whole!

I am Marjorie, and this is my second year teaching MS/HS Math in Selawik, Alaska. I have lived here my whole life. I went to Montana to get my Bachelors Degree in Education, and came back home to teach. I truly believe in these students that they also can go to college outside of Alaska and achieve big things. I am looking forward to learn more about the different cultures I did not get to see growing up.

I'm Emily. I just graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA with my degree in Special Education. I'm originally from Lake Stevens, a smaller town north of Seattle. I just moved to Bethel Alaska to complete an internship to get ready to teach out in the villages. I am so excited to learn more about Alaskan Culture and teach in one of the most beautiful places I've ever been!

I am going into my 5th year of teaching this year and have been at Tuluksak school for every year so far. For my first three years I taught Math for 7th-12th grade and then last year due to staffing issues I moved to teaching all subjects for 5th and 6th grade.

I am a recent college grad from Minnesota! I got my degree in Vocal Music Education. I just moved to Alaska for a teacher training program. This is my third week here! After completing training in the spring, I will be starting my first year of teaching next fall!

I am currently on the Kenai Peninsula living and working in Soldotna Alaska. I am a long time resident here, and have recently completed my MA is Ed specializing in SEL.

My long term goal is to teach in a healthcare setting where I can utilize my various skill sets that I have acquired throughout my career. I have taught in a variety of schools and settings, and enjoy many aspects, but I have a little soft spot in my heart for middle schoolers. To be able to help kiddos that may be facing difficult medical issues both academically as well as social/emotionally is a long term goal that I know can be done in any community.

My teaching journey began in Oklahoma, where I worked until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. After that, I spent three years teaching in Grayling before taking a two-year position at an international school in Panama. While reacclimating to Alaska’s climate has been a challenge, I’m grateful for the opportunity to return.

Our school currently serves 44 students with a dedicated team of about 15 staff members. I’m taking this course as part of my teacher certification process, and I was drawn to it because of the self-paced format and engaging content.

Grayling is located on the Yukon River and serves as a checkpoint for the Iditarod Race. We are part of the Iditarod Area School District. Professionally, I’m working toward completing my second Master’s degree in Administration, with the goal of becoming a superintendent before retiring.

Although I don’t have children of my own, I have a 4-year-old sister back in Oklahoma who is Choctaw, and I truly enjoy learning more about her culture. It’s a pleasure to meet you all!

My name is Christianne. While I grew up and lived in various places, Alaska has been my home for the past 13 years. I originally started working in education for the DOD, then accepted a position as a Life Skills and SLC paraprofessional for ASD while working on my degree in education. I am currently in my third year of teaching 1st grade in the Mat-Su Borough School District.

My name is Melody and I teach special education at a k-12 school in the Lower Kuskokwim School District. I am originally from Tennessee, where I taught for almost 30 years. I am enjoying learning about Alaska and the culture here, but I know I have much more to learn.This will definitely be the place where I retire.

I am a teacher in Atmautluak, Alaska. I just received my MATS Secondary Science from Western Governors Univesity. Before then, I operated a Commuter Rail Train in Denver, Colorado.

I watch movies and TV shows in my free time and attempt to incorporate these interests into my teaching activities. Teaching to me extends beyond academic content because it involves creating meaningful relationships and fostering curiosity while enabling students to find their unique talents.

I have been a health care provider in some pretty diverse communities - but Alaska is bar none the most diverse! I am very excited to learn more about the people, culture and history of this beautiful state.

I switched careers late in life and love being a teacher. I am in my 4th year of teaching and my third in Alaska. I hold a degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and a Masters in Education. I am a retired school teacher/behavior specialist from Texas. I am currently working my third Long Term Substitute Teacher (LTS) position in Nome, Alaska.  I previously had LTS jobs in Utiqiavik at the North Slope Borough School District and in Good News Bay for the Lower Kuskokwim School District. 

I am married with 3 children and 2 grandchildren. My husband stays in Texas with my furbaby Raven. My husband will come visit as often as he can depending on the LTS contract. Truly hoping this contract lasts so we can see the Iditarod in March! 

I was recently asked what I am most proud of in my life, it is my amazing family.  But professionally I am very proud of the opportunity to teach and experience Alaska.

I am currently in my 5th year of teaching and 3rd year teaching in Alaska. I am from Bozeman, Montana and taught for my first 2 years in Kalispell, Montana before moving up here in 2023!

I am a 6th grade ELA/SS teacher at Anchorage Stream Academy. The Alaska Social Studies standards were recently updated so that 6th grade is all about Alaska history, which will make taking this class super helpful for my curriculum. I'm excited to jump into it!

I'm Katherine Relusco, from Philippines, I came here in US last March 2024, I used to teach PreK in Washington DC and came here in Alaska last September 2024. I am now teaching ECE, Kinder, and Grade 1 in Wales, AK. Teaching young children is my passion. I enjoy creating a warm, engaging, and supportive classroom environment where students can grow academically. socially and emotionally. And also I'm very happy to learn about the wonderful culture and traditions here in Alaska.

I'm Jennilyn D. Inil from the Philippines, I have been in the USA Anchorage Alaska last August 2023. During my 1st year in Alaska I taught Combo class 1/2nd Grade at Campbell Stem school. It was quiet challenging. Now that I am in my 3rd year, I am in my new school and I am teaching k/1 Yupik Immersion class. I am very much contented and happy with my new school because in here I grow a lot professionally.

I am in my tenth year of education, third in Alaska. I have taught 5th grade math and science, 6th grade social studies and science, 7th grade math and science, and 8th grade science. Sports have always been a big part of my life. I played football, basketball, track, and baseball in high school. Since becoming a teacher I have coached middle school football, basketball, track, and golf, and high school football and basketball.

Teaching in the Slope has come with many challenges, but each day brings new lessons and opportunities for growth. I enrolled in this course, Alaska Alive, to deepen my understanding of Alaska Native history, culture, and people. I believe this knowledge will strengthen my connection with my students and help me become a more effective and culturally responsive teacher.

My name is Bennett Kraemer! I am originally from Austin, Minnesota. I moved to Alaska in 2020, where I taught for the Lower Kuskokwim School District. After one year in one of Alaska's rural villages, I moved to Alaska, where I have been teaching at a private school ever since. Each year, I fall more and more in love with the natural beauty of this state.

I have been in the education system for over 34 years and love every minute of it. At the age of 52 I decided being a paraprofessional wasn’t enough for me. I needed to be able to be more involved in the decisions for the students. I was fortunate enough to help them earn an education and become a productive adult. I earned my master’s in special education 6 years later. I did not seek a teaching position until I was 65. Proudly I now teach Behavior Support in the Mat Su School District. In my third year I have not found anything more rewarding or challenging.

I’m a math teacher originally from the Philippines. I taught middle school in Mississippi for two years, and this is my first year teaching in Alaska with the Iditarod Area School District, where I work with both middle and high school students. I’m really excited to learn more about Alaska, its culture, traditions, and people and to use those experiences to make my teaching more meaningful and connected to life here. I’m truly looking forward to growing as an educator and becoming part of this wonderful community!

I'm an elementary teacher here in the North Slope Borough School District. I'm from the Philippines, and it is my 3rd year here in Nuiqsut. I have grown to love the place where I am at now. Thus, I am hoping that by enrolling in this course, I will be able to know more about the people, their culture, and their traditions.

I'm a middle school administrator in the Matsu school district. I'm originally from St. Louis, but live in Colorado for 20 years before I moved up here to Alaska three years ago with my wife and six kids. My community is spread out and serves kids from Sutton down to Butte.

The population I currently serve is elementary students in grades K-5. We have a ethnically diverse group of students and I am excited to learn more so I can continue to further develop my relationships with the students and families.

I am a school nurse at Girdwood K-8 and have been a nurse for 9 years. I spend summers commercial fishing with my family in Bristol Bay, and spend winters enjoying the beautiful mountains of south central AK!

Today, I enjoy being part of a close-knit community and learning about its culture, traditions, and values and supporting my student’s growth and success. When working with my students, I enjoy how curious they are about the world around them and wanting to learn about me as much as I enjoy them teaching me the language, their values, and traditions. I look forward to this course to help me grow as an educator.

I currently teach 6th Grade at St. Mary's School District. This is my 3rd year here and I love it! The students are amazing and the community has been very welcoming. I Eskimo Dance with the students and I was given a Yup'ik name last year - Pinyuun - which loosely translated to 'much energy'. Previously I taught middle school math in Arizona and Florida. Before that I taught 4th grade in New York city. I hope to learn more about the Yup'ik culture and Alaska in general.

My teaching journey brought me to the United States, and this is now my third year of serving in U.S. schools. One of the most meaningful chapters of my life was teaching in one of the most beautiful villages in Alaska - Chevak. Living and working there was truly life-changing. I fell deeply in love with the Cup’ik culture, the traditions, the warmth, and the wisdom that the community generously shares. The people of Chevak welcomed me with open hearts - so respectful, kind, and genuine. I carry those experiences with me every day, and they continue to inspire the way I teach and connect with my students. I am grateful for every opportunity to grow, serve, and give back to the communities that have embraced me. Teaching is not just my profession - it is my calling, and I am humbled to continue learning from every student, family, and culture I encounter.

My name is Vanessa and I currently teach in Anchorage! This will be my third year working for the district. Originally from New Jersey. I have taught Kindergarten for two years and this is my first year in first grade!

Over the past several years, I have had the privilege of experiencing different cultures, people, foods, and environments. I began my teaching journey as a general education teacher in the Philippines, where I taught for three years, and later embraced the opportunity to teach in Spain. Altogether, I bring nearly seven years of teaching experience into the classroom.

Through these experiences, I have learned that genuine cultural appreciation begins with respect, grows through knowledge, and is strengthened by genuine human connections. I am excited to share, learn, and celebrate culture together in this course.

I currently teach 4th and 5th grade, but have experience teaching preschool (for 5 years in Oregon - my home state) prior to finishing my teacher prep program and switching to elementary SPED.

I absolutely love my job and truly enjoy supporting such a diverse group of learners - each with unique needs of support required to be successful in school. As a teacher, I uplift, support, and celebrate all of my students - from all cultural backgrounds. Every student feels welcome and safe in my classroom, where learning flourishes. Being Native American, I connect with my Alaska Native students over many shared/similar cultural traditions, beliefs, and ways of life (which are incorporated into my classroom). I am very excited to begin this course and delve deeper into Alaska's rich history, so I can increase my knowledge and understanding and continue to be the best teacher I can be for my students.

Today, I’m a 2nd grade teacher in Gambell, Alaska, where I have the privilege of working with students in a uniquely rich cultural community. I am a substitue teacher for the Anchorage school district. I started my journey as a substitute teacher in the lower 48 states in New Mexico and Arizona. I moved to Anchorge in July of 2021 to be closer to family.

I am a school counselor in the Juneau school district. I started my career in education in Texas in the 90's then in the early 2000's I relocated to Kansas to continue my career. In 2019 I moved to Juneau to be closer to my son and decided to step away from education and pursue some other interests. I have really missed being out of the schools and returned to my true passion, school counseling. I am looking forward to learning more about Alaska's history.

My journey to the Interior followed a transformative period teaching on a Native American Reservation in Nebraska. This experience profoundly shaped my commitment to Indigenous and community-centered pedagogy, teaching me that the most powerful music is that which reflects the soul of its community.

Hello everyone! My name is Daphne and you may call me Daph or Duff. I am a teacher from the Philippines. I'm on my second year of teaching here in Alaska in the village of Noatak. I handle Middle School and High School English Language Arts.

Aside from gaining the Alaska Teaching Certificate, my goal in accomplishing this course is to be more familiarized with Alaska's rich history: its culture and tradition, the community and its people and the language varieties they speak to be more effective and efficient in teaching our Alaska students by integrating teaching strategies with a culturally responsive approach in teaching English Language Arts.

As a C3 participant as well, the learning that I will gain in this course are surely incorporated with the trainings and sessions we had in the C3 project and at Kayana Elders Camp last summer from which I can contribute my experiences.

I am an international teacher from the Philippines currently serving as a cultural exchange educator here in Fairbanks, Alaska. I'm in my second year here. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this vibrant community and to share both my professional experience and my cultural heritage. My name is Azel, and I am currently teaching a K–1 class in Angoon, Alaska. I have been working with the Chatham School District for four years now. I was first assigned to Klukwan School, where I had the wonderful experience of teaching Kindergarten through 7th grade.

I am currently finishing my Master’s degree in Special Education. For the past two years here in Angoon, I taught 4th and 5th grade, which was an amazing group of students. This year, I moved to K–1, and I have truly fallen in love with teaching these little balls of sunshine.

I grew up in the Philippines and moved to Alaska in August 2022. Since then, the district and the school community have become like a family and a home to me. I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work here.

Every day, I continue learning from my students. The people in this community have been some of the kindest and most generous individuals, always willing to share their culture, traditions, and stories, which has made my experience here even more meaningful.

Before coming to Alaska, I had the opportunity to teach in different countries, including the Philippines and South Korea. In the Philippines, I taught various academic subjects, while in Korea I taught English. Teaching students from different cultures, backgrounds, and learning styles has been a very rewarding experience for me.

Now, I am teaching special education in an elementary school here in Alaska, and this is my third year in this field. My previous teaching experiences have helped me grow as an educator and have prepared me to face the daily challenges that come with teaching.

I am always excited to share my knowledge and skills with my students while continuing to learn and grow myself. Through this course, I hope to gain more understanding and insights that will help me develop both personally and professionally as a teacher and as a resident navigating life in Alaska.

Firstly, I'm a science educator with 17 years of teaching experience at the middle and high school levels. I hold a bachelor's degree in secondary education with a major in biological sciences; I'm currently completing my master's degree in educational leadership and management, and I also have master's degree units in science education with a major in biology. I’m originally from the Philippines. I've brought my passion for science education to Two Rivers School and Tanana Middle School in Fairbanks, Alaska. I'm now in my 3rd year as a middle school teacher here in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.

Secondly, Alaska captivates me with its pristine natural landscapes, unique ecosystems, and abundant wildlife—a living laboratory for science education! The opportunity to teach students about boreal forests, glaciers, and Arctic ecology, right in their own backyard, is incredibly rewarding. The tight-knit community and the genuine enthusiasm students show for learning about their environment make Alaska a special place to teach science.

Lastly, I believe that this course will enable me to create more meaningful connections between the science curriculum and the Alaskan context, ultimately fostering greater student engagement and environmental stewardship.

Teaching came to me later in life as I was in the military out of high school, then I went back to school and received my bachelors in Organizational Innovative Management and went on for my Masters in Public Administration. I worked for the government for a while and then realized that family time was being cut short due to my hours. I'm an Occupational Therapist working for SERC serving schools in Alaska. I live in Colorado and also work with the Early Intervention program here serving children from 0-3 years.

What was supposed to be a one year journey has now turned into two... most likely three! I absolutely love how diverse the district and schools are and that is one of the biggest reasons why I wanted to continue teaching here. I am so excited to be taking this course!

I’m originally from western New York and graduated from State University of New York at Geneseo with a bachelor’s degree in Childhood and Special Education. I completed my student teaching in Nenana, quickly fell in love with the community, and was fortunate to accept a full-time teaching position here.

I am currently teaching at Chapman in Anchor Point. I teach Science and Social Studies for middle school, grades 6, 7, & 8.

This is my 2nd year teaching in Alaska. Before I taught for 6 years in Idaho and 4 years in North Carolina. I truly enjoy working with students to spark curiosity and share knowledge about what lies ahead for their future.

I am really working hard to be "all in" the community, and have taken on a few leadership roles at school to support students. I am excited to see how much these students will grow!

I had moved to Florida and worked in a non-profit organization until 2023. My family packed up our vehicle and made the drive from Orlando to Anchorage arriving in July 2023.

Since then there have been so many adjustments, but whenever I feel like I miss Florida, I am reminded that this is probably the most beautiful place in the world.

Teaching has been challenging, as Covid did so much to change how kids are and how they see the world, since I last taught.

I am excited to take this course in order to learn more about this beautiful state and its amazing people.

This is my fifth overall year as a classroom teacher. I also have experience as a K-6 school librarian (2 years), and a substitute teacher in middle and high school. Not a fan!

Two years ago my wife, sons, and I moved from North Dakota to Bethel to continue our journey as foster parents and serve the children of AK. This is our 8th year fostering. My wife works at the district office and our boys are in 3rd and 1st grade this year. I look forward to learning more about everyone throughout this course!

I currently teach 6th and 7th grade students, and I truly enjoy working with them every day. Teaching here has been a meaningful experience for me because I get to learn from my students as much as they learn from me. The community has been very welcoming, and I appreciate how supportive the families and staff are, which makes my adjustment smoother and more comfortable.

Even though it is quite different from where I grew up, I am embracing the culture, the environment, and the unique experiences that come with teaching in rural Alaska. I am also continuously growing as an educator by adapting my lessons to better fit my students’ needs and interests.

I'm Spyder Turco. I'm a second year assistant principal in the Mat-Su School district. Prior this this role, I was a math teacher at a middle school in Idaho.

My wife grew up in Palmer and wanted to come home. When I got an opportunity to work in the schools up here, we moved up.

I am an Intensive Needs Special Ed Teacher in the Kenai Peninsula Borough. I have lived in Kenai area for almost 7 years. At first, it was hard to be here because I felt so far from family, but I have grown to love it, even the winters! I have 3 sons in college and one daughter at home. My husband and I have moved a lot for his work (he is the administrator of a community health organization). We have lived in Iowa, Texas, and Minnesota. I look forward to learning with you!

This is my first year in Alaska as I am currently teaching 5th grade at Gladys Jung. Teaching in Alaska has been an adjustment as I spent the last 10 years living and teaching in the United Arab Emirates. Living and working in Bethel has been a great experience as I had the opportunity to get involved with various activities at my school.

My educational journey has been quite interesting as I started as a business major and I have a BA in Psychology and MBA in Business Administration. I began my journey as a full-time teacher in Phoenix, Arizona where I worked with many ELL students. Learning about other cultures is one of my passions as I have experience tutoring and working in language immersion summer camps in Central Europe. One of my goals is to put my MA in Educational Leadership into use as this was something I delayed while living overseas.

My name is Jay Harold C. Panlilio, and I am originally from the Philippines. I am currently living and teaching in Kotzebue, Alaska, a small community above the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Arctic Borough. This is already my 4th year living and teaching in Alaska. Kotzebue is rich in Iñupiaq culture and is known for its beautiful Arctic landscapes, subsistence traditions, and strong sense of community.

I currently work as a Special Education (SPED) teacher at Kotzebue Middle High School (KMHS). Before becoming a SPED teacher, I taught Health Occupations and Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) courses. I enjoy learning about Alaska’s cultures, history, and communities, and I am excited to learn more through this course and from all of you!

I originally come from San Antonio, Texas and have 14 years of teaching experience in Special Education. I have taught students from PREK-3 to 12th Grade and students qualifying for an Early College High School.

I am originally from Oklahoma. I lived in Fairbanks for six years, and I loved life in the Interior! My husband and I bought our first home and had all three of our children there. We thought we would live there forever! Moving to the Kenai Peninsula was an unexpected treat. We love the coastal community and all the incredible scenery south central Alaska has to offer.

It has been incredible to learn about Alaska history and culture through everyday life - it truly is a different world up here! However, I am looking forward to diving deeper, learning more about our incredible state, and integrating that new knowledge into my teaching and classroom!

I teach high school Physics, Physical Science, Chemistry, and AP Computer Science Principles. I enjoy helping students explore science and technology through hands-on activities and problem-solving. I live in Anchorage with my family and recently graduated with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education. I was a long-term sub this spring in third grade while I waited for my initial cert and LOVED teaching The Nest Egg curriculum. I am currently a K-12 Special Education Teacher at Tetlin School, and on my second school year in the Alaska Gateway School District. Prior to moving to the United States, I spent thirteen rewarding years teaching young learners in the Philippines. In my current role, I primarily serve children of Athabascan descent. My name is Oliver and I just finished my first year teaching in Kasigluk, AK. I'm originally from Seattle, WA, and this past year was my first year in education. I teach social studies and english to middle and high schoolers at Akiuk Memorial School.

Moving to Alaska has added a new chapter to my story, but my roots remain deeply Filipino. The values I carry, resilience and caring for others come from home and from the family that raised me.

My name is Noah Johnson and I am a Middle School PE and Health teacher at Central Middle School of Science in Anchorage. This coming year will be my third year of teaching within ASD and my fourth year in total. I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska and love giving back to the community that raised me. I am also a football and wrestling coach and enjoy every second of time I get to influence the young athletes in the state.

In my free time I love to golf, camp, fish, and take advantage of all Alaska has to offer. I also love to introduce any and all activities to my students that they can use in the community or the remainder of time they spend in this great state.

I'm Doug, and I'm a school psychologist who'll be working with Mat-Su Borough School District. I'll be working remote, and I live in Florida. I have worked in-person a few years ago for Chugach and Lower Kuskokwim School District. I had so many positive and cultural experiences there. I loved it!

I am from Boston Massachusetts. I have been teaching science there for the last 12 years. I am moving to teach in the Lower Kuskokwim School District Math/Science.

My home is in Texas, and now it feels like Alaska! I had a long career there in many roles: Teacher, Region 4, University of Texas, Director...retired and came to Alaska.
