Claim: The sport fish population of Lake Grace is decreasing in size because of water quality and human population.
Evidence:
1. The water pH is becoming more acidic. In 1995, it was 6.7, and in 2005 it was 5.8.
2. The dissolved oxygen levels are steadily decreasing. In 1995, there was 10.2 mg/L, and in 2005 there were 9.5 mg/L.
3. Invasive species such as water hyacinth and hydrilla were introduced to Lake Grace for the first time in 1998.
4. As human population increased, so did demand for food, with farmers beginning to operate a large hog farm in 2001.
Reasoning:
1. As the water becomes more acidic, the fish can no longer tolerate the pH, so they die.
2. As the dissolved oxygen levels decrease, fish can no longer get oxygen to breathe so they die.
3. These invasive species are using some of the nutrients that the fish previously had to themselves, so they are driven out by competition.
4. Since human population increases, industries such as farming would increase, which would increase chemical runoff of fertilizers and nitrates. These chemicals runoff into Lake Grace, which can prohibit the fish from living successful lives. Also, as population increases, more and more people will want to fish at Lake Grace, so overfishing may occur.

They are being outcompeted for these resources, so this would explain a population decrease. As herbicides are being introduced into the lake, this would result in harmful bioaccumulation within the fish of the environment, which in turn will spread throughout the population of fish as predation occurs. Because of the growing algae population due to increased nitrate levels, more oxygen is being used up by the process of eutrophication. This oxygen in the past has mainly gone to fish, and is now going elsewhere. Construction of new hotels and restaurants means that more fish are probably being caught for food (restaurant) and recreational purposes.

Claim: The fish population is decreasing in size because of the temperature increase.

Evidence:
-The white bass can only spawn in water ranging from 12 to 20 degrees celsius.
-Invasive species of water plants are beginning to grow in Lake Grace because of the rising temperatures.
- The city council begins to use herbicides to slow the spread of the invasive water plants.
- pH levels are getting more acidic which most fish species can't survive in

Reasoning:
Fish population is decreasing in size because water temperatures are too high for most fish to reproduce and survive. Also this causes a fast growth of invasive water plants which the fish have to compete with. The pH level increase causes a lower amount of dissolved oxygen and fish could suffocate and die due to very little oxygen availability. The decrease in fish causes many restaurants to close down because they can't get fish to make food for the people.

Claim: The sport fish population in Lake Grace is decreasing in size because of overfishing in the lake.

Evidence:
- More and more sport fishers had made fishing trips to Lake Grace over the years decreasing the fish population in the lake.
- Along with more tourists coming to Lake Grace, more habitants of Aidanville contributed to the overfishing as well.
- In the last year because of overfishing and fish decrease economy has also gone down.

Reasoning:
- The area surrounding this lake has added more attractions such as a spa, golf course, highway, etc. These activities had attracted more people to the lake.
- The population in Aidanville has increased in the last couple years. In 1980 the population was 2,016 and in 2,000 it grew to 3,824. More people living in the area contribute to the amount of fishers using the Lake causing fish population to go down.
-The Aidanville economy has gone down in the recent years. This is because the economy is heavily dependent on sport fishing and tourism. When overfishing occurs, tourism decreases, as well as the town's businesses and shops.

Claim:
The sport fish population in Lake Grace is decreasing because of the increase in Triclopyr (Herbicide) use in response to the invasive species.

Evidence:
Triclopyr concentrations jumped to 8-11 ppb in 2004/2005. Triclopyr is only safe for irrigation at 2 ppb. Number of fish caught generally began to decline after 2005.

Reasoning:
Since the Triclopyr use was highest immediately prior to the fish catch decreasing, it is likely that the Triclopyr is decreasing the fish populations due to it's high concentrations.

Claim:
The sport fish population in Lake Grace is decreasing because of over fishing

Evidence:
Over the last 5 years, anglers have been catching few and fewer of the large sport fish that once made lake Grace so famous.

Reasoning:
Overfishing has resulted to population of sport fish to decrease.

Timothy: Good job supporting your claim by connecting it to the evidence and reasoning that you presented. The effects of overfishing the sport fish population have finally caught up with the environment, resulting in a decrease in population.
