Holy Grail — Jay-Z feat. Justin Timberlake

WARNING: Explicit language throughout song. It came out in 2011 with a title and lyrics referencing the "Holy Grail." Specifically in the chorus:

"And baby
It's amazing I'm in this maze with you
I just can't crack your code
One day you're screaming you love me loud
The next day you're so cold
One day you're here, one day you're there
One day you care, you're so unfair
Sipping from your cup 'til it runneth over, Holy Grail"

In this song, they do reference a cup, but also mention cracking a code which made me think of the DaVinci Code. The lyrics are comparing love to finding/drinking from the grail as if they cannot get enough despite the cruelty in return. However, the muse may not be a person, but rather "fame." Fame is fickle, doing both wrong and good on a daily basis; it's obvious the Jay-Z knows this firsthand. In addition, the song samples Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit."

In the 2006 film "The DaVinci Code," the idea of the legendary Holy Grail becomes something other than a tangible cup. According to the novel it was based on, a monk is on the hunt for one and guns down a museum curator to find it. However, the film spends its entirety questioning whether the cup is real or if its a secret. A professor (Tom Hanks) is framed for the murder of the curator and tries to prove his innocence in unveiling the mystery of the grail--moreover, Mary Magdalene's relationship with Jesus that the Church has been covering up for years. The film goes on to suggest that Mary and Jesus were actually married and even had a daughter named Sarah. However, it was met with criticism from the Catholic Church for the accusation of a two-thousand-year-old cover-up concerning what the Holy Grail really is.

The clues make reference to the fact that they are meant to go on a quest. It is found out that Rebecca's father, Randall Garner, is actually the one to have kidnapped her. He experienced a fire that killed all of his family expect Rebecca, and the traumatic left him mentally ill and caused him to be institutionalized at a sanitorium. At this sanitorium, he met a fellow patient who is the mother of Spencer Reid of the BAU's mother. She used to be a professor of medieval texts and told him about the adventures of the King Arthur's knights, the holy grail, and the Fisher King. Randell plays into a delusion that he is the Fisher King, the FBI agents are the knights, and his daughter Rebecca is a grail that has to be rescued by the knights. Rebecca is precious to him, and he does not realize the harm he is putting her through. She is, to him, the best thing in the world and wants her to be recused.

There is a band named Holy Grail from Pasadena, California. Holy Grail is a heavy metal band. I find their genre of music to be ironic since grails are now typically thought of as a cup made out of metal. Also, in Parzival, the grail is a rock, and Holy Grail makes rock music. Their song "Crystal King" also has lyrics that can be thought to mirror Geoffrey of Monmouth's portrayal of King Arthur. Some examples of lyrics are:

"It's just another day out on the battlefield
Proclaiming victory we conquer all
We're on the top now it's time to strike
We must defend the crown at any given price"

According to local lore, the waters from this well have three attributes in common with blood: the waters are red, warm, and coagulate. The Holy Thorn Tree blooms in the Chalice Well every Christmas; local legend says that this tree took root when Joseph of Arimathea drove his staff into the ground nearby.

The well cover, created by Frederick Bligh Bond in 1919, features a symbol known as the Vesica Piscis.

Tuck Everlasting is an incredible movie that uses the Holy Grail archetype throughout its plot. Tuck Everlasting is a 2002 film starring Alexis Bledel and Ben Kingsley that explores the concepts of everlasting life through the Tuck Family. Winnie, the main character, stumbles upon the Tucks' house in the woods and observes them drinking from a spring that she later finds out gave the entire Tuck family immortality over 80 years ago. Of course, as a romance movie, Winnie and the youngest Tuck, Jesse, must fight through a variety of obstacles, including his immortality and those seeking to conquer the spring, to stay together.

The Holy Grail appears in Tuck Everlasting in the form of the eternal spring. The end of the movie is solely focused upon a host of characters attempting to understand the Tucks' secret as well as conquer the spring for themselves. The interesting juxtaposition in the film comes from its hard look at immortality, as the Tuck family despises being immortal. However, as others strongly desire the immortality that the Tucks have, they constantly seek the spring and yearn for its qualities.

After Booth's successful attempt to steal the museum egg, he's captured by FBI special agent John Hartley (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), who is then framed for swapping the recovered egg with a forgery, after Black successfully swaps the egg while disguised as part of the FBI recovery team. In order to clear his name and bring down "The Bishop," Hartley proposes to Booth that they work together to find the other 2 missing eggs. If they are successful, then they will both get what they want- Hartley will clear his name, and Booth will reclaim his spot as the number one art thief in the world.

Parsifal is an opera composed by Richard Wagner. The opera is a loose adaptation of Parzival and follows his search for the Holy Grail. The grail has religious meaning, and at the end of the opera Parsifal raises the grail over a "worshiping brotherhood" and Knights praise "the miracle of salvation." The imagery of the scene includes bright white light and doves, which also goes along with a religious theme.
Parsifal - Wikipedia

One of the older movies that came to mind was “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”. This 1975 film takes King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table's quest for the Holy Grail and turns it into a comedy. Along the way the group attempts to recruit different people to join them on their quest. The film also has Arthur believing that God has ordered him and his men to go on this quest to find the Grail. At some point the group gets separated and is unable to find one another. In the end, it is unknown whether or not the group has succeeded on their quest as it leaves the audience with a black screen at the very end of the film.

Throughout the entirety of the Harry Potter series, there are many instances where items have had distinct similarities to the Arthurian holy grail. However, in the fourth film, released in 2005, the main cast of characters compete in the Triwizard Tournament, which is a magical competition designed to select a sole victor from one of three wizarding schools. The victor then receives the Triwizard Cup, a monetary prize, and as always, bragging rights.

The entire journey of the Triwizard Tournament resembles that of any Arthurian quest, complete with multiple tasks that involve mythical beings, rescuing damsels, fighting, and seeking a grail. Harry also utilizes his friends and companions for help in these obstacles, akin to King Arthur. Most importantly, the holy grail is represented by the Triwizard Cup. Winning this cup is the goal of all competitors, and winning it proves their bravery, strength, compassion, and honor.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is a 2013 film based on the series The Mortal Instruments by author Cassandra Clare. In recent years, the book series was also adapted as a television show. The film, starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, explores a mythical world where Shadowhunters reign supreme. Shadowhunters are half-human, half-angel demon slayers and the film follows Clary as she is thrust into this world and learns that she is a Shadowhunter.

The core conflict in this film is the competition over an object called the Mortal Cup, which is the holy grail in the film. The Mortal Cup has the power to turn humans into Shadowhunters and was created by Angel Raziel and given to the first Shadowhunter. Nefarious characters seek the Mortal Cup to create armies of Shadowhunters, wanting to rule the mythical world and destroy its balance. Clary and the other Shadowhunters must team up to rescue the Mortal Cup for themselves to avoid an unequal distribution of power among all mythical beings.

Avengers: Endgame is the final movie (potentially!) in the Marvel Avengers series, particularly the Phase III of Marvel superhero comic characters. This action-heavy film features the superhero fight against the demigod, Thanos, and his intention to destroy the world. Utilizing almost every superhero up until 2019, the characters seek to stop Thanos from collecting all of the Infinity Stones, which are akin to the Holy Grail.

The Infinity Stones are six powerful gems that include: 1) Space; 2) Reality; 3) Power; 4) Mind; 5) Time; and 6) Soul. The gems were formed from the Big Bang of six different timelines/singularities. All characters throughout many Marvel films, both good and evil, seek to possess at least one of these stones as they provide total power. For example, Dr. Strange, a sorcerer in multiple dimensions, holds the Time stone throughout the previous film, Avengers: Infinity War, and is able to create multiple different timelines and reverse the negative outcomes his team faces. However, in Endgame, Thanos seeks to complete a glove fit with ALL six of the powerful gems to completely rule all universes. These stones are the Holy Grail that link the Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III Marvel films together and culminate in an epic showdown that dismantles a wide variety of characters and plots.

Lancelot du Lac is a 1974 film from Robert Bresson that explores the relationship between Lancelot and Guinevere. Bresson took inspiration from Chrétien de Troyes and Arthurian legend for this film, but strayed from classic interpretation by using graphic violence. The Holy Grail in Lancelot du Lac is that, the classic Arthurian Holy Grail. King Arthur utilizes Lancelot and 99 other knights to help him find the Holy Grail, but instead, gains a lot more than he bargained for when he discovers that Lancelot and his beloved Guinevere are having an affair.

I'm no gamer by any means, but I have spent my fair share of hours on Webkinz and I always love visiting the Curio Shop. In this older computer game, courageous pet owners can click on up to three stones per day, hoping to collect rare gems. Through these quests, users can strive to collect 30 unique gems to achieve the Crown of Wonder. The Crown of Wonder is one of the Holy Grails in Webkinz World, having users complete many a quest over a long period to achieve the royal crown.

This spell card, in English titled "Forbidden Chalice" and in the original Japanese titled "きんじられたせいはい" (which translates more closely to "Forbidden Holy Grail"), was first published in the Raging Battle set in 2009. When played, the card allowed the user to "target 1 face-up monster on the field; until the end of this turn, that target gains 400 ATK, but its effects are negated." What made this card unique from other generic effect-negating cards like "Breakthrough Skill" is that it could be activated during the Damage Step allowing it to stop flip effects that are activated because of an attack. With the addition of many more spells and traps, this card has become quite obsolete in competitive play. Players now opt for more adaptable effect-negating cards such as the popular hand-trap "Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring".
