I believe that Dally’s motivation is his love for Johnny. I believe this because the book specifically states that Jonny was all that Dally loved, the entire group agreed. When Johnny dies Dally loses his will or motivation to live and “He died violent and young and desperate” getting  himself shot by a police officer.  So that is why Dallys greatest and only motivation is his love for Johnny.

For example when he went to jail multiple times an experience that would scar most people for life but he emerges almost mentally unscaved whe he knows it would change most people dramatically so when Johnny turns himself in Dally is quick to say “you get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me”76. So that is why his greatest strength is his response to adversity.

He is protagonist because he fights for and leads their gang through the hard times depicted in this book. He is static because in the book he goes from being a blank slate tough guy to killing himself over the death of a fellow gang member. He is round mostly for the same reasons as he is static his blank slate traits start as the skin of the onion the his inner complexity is revealed later in the story and that is why dally is a protagonistic, round,and static character.

The weaknesses of an Entrepreneur are that they are insensitive, risk prone, and are defiant as evidenced by how he always “blew off steam in gang fights”. There strengths are direct, bold, rational,and practical. So it is clear to see that dally has an entrepreneurial personality despite his condition of life.
