It reflects in all aspects of media and social interactions. Eurocentrism possesses an effect on the outlook of the culture of others in comparison to that of eurocentric countries. In particular, Eurocentrism is the reason for which the prospect of Afrocentrism is misguided. Due to different media influences such as literature African society, over the years, has attained a stained identity of catastrophe based on "stories" generated by eurocentric writers. According to the author  Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, stories hold the power to dispossess and malign, but stories also have the power to empower and humanize. Western civilization holds the mindset that African society is only affiliated with hardship. It therefore fails to recognize the positive achievements or aspects of the African culture such as the willingness to learn. Literature is seen as the medium to change the image of African society as the literature serves as a way of highlighting the good characteristics of the society that world media powers fail to acknowledge. Through literature, a more dynamic and vivid insight to the genuine African culture present within the continent. This theory was proven with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie' novel where she highlighted the true aspects of the African society and the effectivity of this method was seen in the shock of those who read it. This method can be used to lift the Eurocentric mindset of the Caribbean. The Caribbean is usually associated with underdevelopment and only recognized for our sun, sea and sand. However  through the use of literature, among other media factors such as music or television, this can be disassociated. This picture is a perfect representation of the shifting gender roles in today's society. During the course of history, males have naturally been seen as the breadwinners of most family households. The males were regarded as the head of a family as it would usually be the male who worked and earned the majority of the money which the family used. In this light, females were regarded as the ones to stay at home taking care of children and the house. However, a shift in the roles of gender have been noticed in society. Females have assumed an equal role of the breadwinner in society and this is as a result of development and education. These both factors allowed for the empowerment of females among society, granting them the ability to climb the 'social ladder' so to say. In some instances, as depicted in the picture, males are the ones who now assume the role of taking care of the house and child. This shift in gender role is a positive characteristic of a country's society as it pronounces the developmental progress in said country's society along with other areas. The development is also reflected in other areas such as the birth rates and possibly the infant mortality rates in society. Shifting gender roles results in these changes since as a result of female empowerment, more women choose to focus on careers first before having families and in doing so they have fewer children. As the years went by, the university grew into some geographically dispersed but yet interlocked campuses with one mandate, Caribbean development. This is all according to the Report of the One UWI Task Force. The One UWI initiative is an ideology that exists. It is composed of the idea that even tho the University Campuses are divided physically, it would all operate as 1 unified organization. This was established as an attempt to unify the Caribbean islands through one common medium, education. With this unification, developmental progress would be theoretically made easier based on the grounds that the various countries comprising the Caribbean would possess a common level of education which would henceforth facilitate economical growth among other types of growth. With this Unification of the One UWI initiative, resources available to the university would be easier to come by since the university would be able to tap into the various country's resources. As part of the unification, it was also expected that a boost in the number of educational opportunities present within the institutes would increase based on the same shared resources principle, essentially granting students coming from the Caribbean a wider spectrum of education branching into different fields. The One UWI initiative definitely holds its benefits however it has some downsides as resources of the university can become stretched between the campuses as well as the relations between the campuses can fall subject to national tension. The initiative however brought with it a higher level of recognition for the university due to the number of different campuses under it's name. ]]> 2017-12-02 01:08:25 UTC https://padlet.com/kbhajan_101/pj17ayk7zaye/wish/212469557 kbhajan_101 https://padlet.com/kbhajan_101/pj17ayk7zaye/wish/212470812 Throughout this course, a sense of enlightenment was obtained on the issues of Eurocentrism, gender roles, racism and cultural imperialism present in our Caribbean society. The historical aspects and causes of these different ideologies were explored and discussed which lead to a greater understanding as to how unique and precious our own Caribbean culture as a hybrid culture is in regards to Eurocentric views. The sense of the Caribbean culture being inferior was lifted as I am now fully confident in embracing my identity as a Caribbean personality. Aspects such as our slang or creole which were previously considered to be a downside to our culture is now understood as being part of our amazingly unique character unparalleled by any culture. Tho the tutorials weren't as regular as other courses, it still proved to cover a wide array of topics as well as encouraging a certain level of critical thinking pertaining to historical events and present ones.
