As I continue to learn in my journey of becoming ESL certified I've learned to implement many strategies. Some that I have implemented on a regular basis are pre teaching vocabulary explicitly to improve students content learning, providing students with sentence starters, modeling expectations during lessons, and making meaning of content by connecting learning to student's home life or culture.

I know we have discussed critical stance, but it's an area I'd like to explore more and strategies on how to improve oracy in my classroom. As I look at TELPAS data students are not doing well in this area, and I'd like to build their confidence.

I printed out 24 different items from this activity for each group of 3-5 students. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ac9aoKbNFnLz7MRJOT0nx2YmpxTE6s29/view

B) Afterwards, students created their own "Columbian Exchange" Menu

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tdhEHjj5WAVcuM_hQb5fjMpJ0vstQPZp/view

C) Students also read and discussed about the controversy surrounding Columbus Day, and as a class we created our own new term for the Columbian Exchange that recognizes its impact on indigenous people.

https://www.npr.org/2019/10/14/769083847/columbus-day-or-indigenous-peoples-day

3) Supports I used included group work, student work samples as exemplars (like https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14zvfOV3IYjkMjgmixn1mNUqFEmLJJnfyIqdRH0vjk-o/edit?usp=sharing and https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1jdYnNfsG-OBqrSXTtqV6-HxZ_DAB5kucq3zVOS1N32M/edit?slide=id.g26b2cab3c8c_0_2#slide=id.g26b2cab3c8c_0_2), pictures of plants and animals, and modeling.

4) Instructional challenges include students not being familiar with the controversy behind Columbus Day. They also may not understand the metaphorical meaning behind the word "exchange" where a term of equal trade really wasn't equal for indigenous people.
